I know here awhile back Academy Sports sold out to someone else, but what happened to the fishing department? Academy use to carry and stock just about everything you needed for fishing, plus most of the brand named baits that are out there today. Went there yesterday to find a few baits, asked a salesperson where they were located at, he said they no longer stocked certain brands. It's like the fishing department has been cut way back. Oh well, guess I need to start ordering more online from Tackle Warehouse or one of the others. frown

It's like you said, new owners!
You are not the first to complain, there was another long, long thread a while back.
The consensus is that certain stores are cutting back while other stores in certain areas are still well stocked and going strong.
I would talk to someone in authority other than a sales person and get their explaination, but sadly this seems to be the trend.

Just one more cast!

I have found out that each store is basically its own entity. They all participate in the weekly ads that gets mailed out. But each store does carry additional and/or different merchandise than others. Each store will also do their own discounts as well.

I have found this out on both occasions. The stores that are closer to more popular lakes listen to the fisherman that frequent those stores and tend to have a better selection of merchandise. Take rods for example. I went into one and they had Loomis, Duckett Micro Majic, Abu as well as Shimano. Went into a few in my area and they had three types of allstars, lots of the h20 as well as the less inferior brands. However, I have seen some of the high end rods at some stores, but only one and come to find out that store does not carry them, they took it as a return or an exchange, because it is in there overall system. This is why you can take some purchase from one store and return it to another.

As for the discounts, works the same way. Some high en hooks were on sale, so I got like 10 of each size 1/0-5/0. However, there were only like 2 in the 3/0 and 4 in the 4/0. No problem, go to another store thinking that they would have the same sale. No way jose. Asked the store manager and they said that each store is responsible for their own discounts. Now if you bring the receipt in we will honor the price. Went out to the truck and got the receipt.

Hope this helps.

I've pretty much gave up on shopping at the Conroe location because of measly stock. I've started to order online from them and get what I want, without wasting time/Gas. They're starting to sell some more brands (Jackal, Koppers, RoboWorms, Missle, etc)too. Shipping is reasonable also. Usually get my order in 3 or 4 days. I'm sure it helps that their Warehouse is in Katy though.

I've only been in a couple.

The one in Tyler seemed well stocked.

The one in Mesquite has a problem with stocking.

The one in Garland sems well stocked. Was there the first time today. No reason to go to Mesquite now.

The one in Plano seemed to be a bit light.

I'm guessing they don't make a lot of money on fishing products. Team sports, shoes, and clothes is the money maker for them. If I bought a company I would restructure the things that didn't make me money also. Every time I go there it's full, so I'm guessing they're doing just fine. I guess they're ok with selling the basics.

They prefer selling guns and shoes to anything else.

We stopped at the Academy in Tyler on the way to fork a couple weeks ago and I was totally shocked! It put all of the other academys I have been in to shame. It was unbelievable how much fishin stuff they have. Makes me not want to go to the academys around here anymore. Something that really ticks me off, the academy in Conroe doesn't even have my favorite worm anymore which they always had until about 6 months ago hammer

I usually go to the one in Mesquite, but when we go to Memphis we always stop at the one on Texarkana. Best kept secret, oops it was. Always stocked with fishing gear

Instead of complaining on a message forum, go to the source and let them know. Will it change things? Who knows, but it won't if you don't try.......

Yesterday, the Academy in north Okla City, had their Tournament Choice Game Day spinning rods on sale. Regular price was $39.99 marked down to $4.99

A few years ago, I had a bad experience with an Academy truck driver. He was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic, in a rain, and in a construction area on I-10 just east of Beaumont. I got his trailer number and when I got home, I went to the link above and wrote a letter that if that is how Academy had no more concern about the driving public, I would no longer be a customer. A few days later I got a phone call from the manager of transportation for Academy, apologizing for the driver, and asked if I would talk to the owner of the company that Academy contracts to deliver their products. I agreed. When I talked to that gentleman, he told me he had already identified the driver and since he had several complaints, he was terminated that morning. And for icing on the cake, Academy sent me a nice gift card for my time. Going to the source does work.
