I have been out fishing for bass lately and have seen several carp. I have been throwing different flies at them and they will npt even look at them. What type of flies are you guys catching these guys on? I imagine it would be a blast to hook into one of these guys. Thanks for any help here.

Use any crayfish or scud pattern you have. Even a small phesant tail nymph or hares ear will get bit.

Just remember that these fish are really spooky and you will need to cast well ahead and past the fish, wait till the fish approaches and give her a twitch. The carp should turn away from you and move toward your fly. Now just make it eat it. LOL

I catch them on crappie jigs pretty frequently when jigging shallow crappie. Work it slowly and you'll get bit.

I'd love to help you out, but I don't know the first thing about fly fishing or fly patterns.

I can tell you, that among the natural sources of food carp hunt for in the wild, are nightcrawlers, leeches, crayfish, insects, insect larvae, bloodworms, snails, mussels, and fresh water shrimp.

Anything you have that can replicate those things, especially if you've seen any of them in the area, should go a long way towards getting carp to devour your fly.

Crayfish are one of their favorites. Carp don't have any "traditional" teeth, but they have pharyngeal teeth, in the very back of their throat, that exist specifically to crush up shells of creatures like crayfish and mussels.

As Brewboy said, Carp are often VERY wary fish. Much more so when they are in clear water, so if you can easily see the fish to throw flies at them, you'll definitely want to do whatever you can to avoid spooking them.

Cast well past the fish, and either slowly work it back towards the carp, or just wait for the carp to make it's way there, then twitch it a little, see if the carp will take it.

If you hook one, be sure to let him take as much line as he needs! Carp are very strong fish, with tons of stamina, and very soft mouths. If they can't take as much line as they need, they will often rip the hook right out of their lip.

Good luck! Post some pictures if you land a few!

The Fort Worth Cabelas has a selection of carp flies in stock. I think they're the same flies as here . Maybe the Buda store has it as well.

If you make the trip out bee caves check out Sportman's finest. They have a good selection of flies and some for carp.
