I have always fished a little bit, but recently have just started getting into bass fishing. I have been going with friends on their boats, but feel it is time to get my own.

I am looking at a 2008 Nitro Z6 on here, with a 115 Mercury. Any comments, suggestions? Would this be a good starter boat for me? Not fishing tournaments or anything, or really on any big lakes, just a weekend fisherman on Lake Tyler, and an every now an then fisher on Fork. What do yall think?

Trying to sell a 2006 482 now, only owner since new and had such good luck with it we purchased a new z9. Many people have opinions on nitro boats but we had nothing but good luck with ours. It has spent many days on eagle mountain and lake fork with no problems at all.

Everyone has an opinion, so here is mine. I don't like the concept of a "starter boat". I always thought it was better to buy a well maintained used boat close to the size you would like to end up with. Say, if you really want a 20-21' boat, go buy a used 20 footer, enjoy it, get used to it, and then sell it and move into a newer or brand new 20 or 21 foot boat. It seems to me, you will never be happy with a 16 or 17 footer if you really aspire to have a large boat. Also, I would suggest you will grow tired of the small boat quickly and will find resale to be less than stellar for a Z6. Like I said, this is just my opinion that has been formed over years of owning bassboats.

Depending on the financial situation...........

New "starter": easier to finance, will grow tired of it quicker; unless the motor is 115 or bigger. Harder to sell later if motor is too small.

Used starter: good option if not sure about fishing

New Big boat: very expensive, will loose a lot of money if you try to sell in the first 5 years. Easy to finance but still expensive $50,000+

Used Big: harder to finance, cash is KING. Best bet if money is available. You can always recoup your investment.

I never owned a Nitro so the only basis for my opinion is what I have heard. As far as a sarter boat I suggest that you buy what you can comfortably afford. I would go for a quality brand that is a little smaller that a bigger boat of lower quality. If you have to spend a little more to get a quality brand it is usaully worth it. I went a little over my budget when I ordered my 1986 Ranger but here it will be 28 years old in Nov. and it still floats with no leaks. I made the mistake and got a box channel trailer but it is a quality one. I have welded some plates on 2 xmembers but from I have heard that is good for a box channel.

If it fits your needs and checks out fine then go for it. If it is a first boat you will probably be making a decision in the future as to whether or or not you like fishing. If you don't like it sell it and be done. If you like to fish step up to a bigger boat.

08 Z6 should be under 14k if immaculate........ I've owned its 17'6" predecessor for 17 years......still looks and runs great....... if it's been taken care of it should be a fine 50+ mph boat that will do fine for what it is

I have a 17.5ft Ranger "starter" boat for 11 years now...Does everything I could want it to do.

If you just want a starter boat - look for a good deal on something used and buy the biggest boat you can afford - I made the mistake of buying a small boat and then got hooked on bass fishing. I started fishing Tournaments with it in all kinds of weather and couldn't wait to get into a bigger boat. A small boat has no resale value unless it is kept immaculate and even then it's hard to get your money back. I have 2 boats now because I'm still stuck with the little one.

Had a x-5. Same as the z6 before the name change. Great starter boat! Recently upgraded.

That part, I have to disagree. The 18 foot boats are hard to find and when you compare prices, they lose a lot less value as each year goes by. I see $60,000 boats sell for $35,000 sfter 4 years, but a $25,000 18 foot boat sells for $18,00 after 4 years. As I was signing the papers on my 18 foot Triton, other people were calling about it. People want a boat that you can keep in a garage. Maybe not on Texas Fork Forums, but overall, it's true.

I have a 2005 Nitro NX 750 (17� 6�) with a 90 hp Mercury that was bought brand new in 2006. Absolutely love it. Outside of normal wear/tear items (bilge & recirculating pump & battery replacement) I have not had any issues with the boat. I use it for primarily for fishing and but I have also used it to pull the kids around on a tube. The size is also a good trailering size and easy to load and unload, especially if you are by yourself.

I like the Nitro Z line. I have no need to upgrade at this point in time otherwise I would get the Z7. The Z6 basically replaced mine and a couple other boats in this size category.

I agree with the others, buying a good used boat for you first boat is the way to go. I just got a really good deal at the time I bought the boat that is why I bought it new. 2 grown men are comfortable, 3 gets a little tight. Found that out on father�s day weekend when my dad (6� 1� & 220) my 17 yr old (6�+ & 240) and myself (5� 8� & 200) were all in the boat at the same time to do some fishing.

The other factors to look at are will you only be using the boat for fishing? If yes then great. If no, you have a family and want to take the kids out, a bass boat is not as enjoyable for a family outing on the lake. Especially with small kids involved. Look at your needs and how you will use it. That will help you determine the best boat for you. Also look at what features you want and what accessories you want.
