Anyone ever tried using an underwater green light that turns on during the night and off during the day. Would this in turn move more fish to the area for the morning bite? Or would this just give them too much to eat all night and hurt the fishing during the day? :P Just something I was dreaming up during the day and was going to give it a try and compare results but I figure maybe someone already tried this experiment lol.

You could set it up on a timer to turn on say at 4am.

Mine turns on at 6:00 P.M. and turns off at 6:00 A.M. It's better for getting lmb and white bass to bite at night than it is crappie. White bass action can be fast at times in the light.
The bite for lmb and white bass starts about one hour after the light turns on.
The crappie have been almost non-existent in the slips where I keep my boat for the last five months. They disappeared about mid-Octomber for the day bite. Those who fish mainly at night reported they disappeared about the same time from the night bite.
They have just started to return to our dock the last two weeks. We catch one or two each day but that is about it. Those who fish at night are having better results now. A few have told me they are now catching 10-15 keepers each night they fish.
The lmb and the white bass will bite in the light pool. The crappie bite outside the circle of light. So depending on where you have the light, it might be easier be easier to use a bobber to cast beyond the light and allow the float to keep the jig or bait where the crappie hang out.
I have two porcupine fish attractors at the end of my slip, which is just outside the circle of light. So I fish around the fish attractor and in the slip next to mine, which is also outside the circle of light.

I've always wondered why some think that having light in a slip is important, aside from helping you tie-on or not fall in. We have now had the slip we call The Office for 10 years and have not had lights in it any of that time. Case in point; this past Saturday morning before the sun came up, the crappie were 5-6' shallow, and were eating. Had we turned any lights on, that bite would have stopped so quick that you would've heard the thud. Simply put...you do not need lights to catch crappie, and especially if they're shallow. Granted, lights attact bugs, shad and white bass; none of which excite me

The green mercury vapor underwater light does not help you tie on jigs or anything else. It does turn the water a green color in a 20 foot circle around it. It does not provide much illumination above the water surface.
Underwater lights attract plankton, which attracts bait fish, which attracts predator fish.
Crappie is a predator fish and is attracted by the bait fish. But they hang out just outside the edge of the light, where they can see but not bee seen. Lgm and white bass are more aggressive and enter the light to attack the bait fish.

Are you talking about above surface lights or underwater lights.
I have not seen the bite stop when the underwater lights are turned on. I have seen the bite start within one hour of turning the underwater lights on in late afternoon, just before the sun sets.
The largemouth bass and the while bass bite within the lighted circle, the crappie bit at the edges of the lighted circle, where the shadow begins.

I have a green monster under my boat. It's about 10' under water. We have had it off and the crappie have been all up in my slip. Bamboo and PVC orbs to boot. In the next two weeks I'm gonna commit to leave the light on all week then fish Saturday morn. I hope the bite stays strong....I really need to know the effect

Yeah I get that you don't NEED the light to catch them. Only seeing if it improves them during the day by having an underwater green light for example on during the night. Then when you come back next day, will more fish be in the area because the light attracted them to the area and in essence into all your brush/condo's etc. under your slips. One would think more crappie would be in the "area" from the nighttime attraction. The light would be off obviously when the sun comes up. My only concern would be as some have brought up in this post other predators spooking crappie away, and or full belly's for that morning of fishing from the abundance of baitfish stacked around the light. Would be curious to know your results CBFisher, only way to find out is by trying. Figured someone may have already .

If you feel the lights help then by all means use it. All I am saying is when my lights are off I have better luck. Just saying! Imho I think the lights bring bigger predator fish that MAY spook the crappie jmo. I am not interested in catching sandbass and lmb at this time.

Then when you come back next day, will more fish be in the area because the light attracted them to the area and in essence into all your brush/condo's etc. under your slips. The people in my dock who have used the mercury underwater lights for over a year say yes, the lights attract the crappie to the area and they stay in the area. I have only had one since September so I can't say. And it would not matter if I turned mine off, as some of the other slip owners have them and don't turn them off. The ones I have talked with do not fish for the crappie in the lighted circle. They fish for them outside the lights, in the shadows. Some have trapdoors cut into their deck area and open the trap doors to fish for crappie. Most place their brush outside the circle of light generated by their underwater light. They then fish the brush areas for crappie, the light circles for bass. I do know that crappie and bass will stay in the same general area. I have caught 22"-25" lmb from the same areas I catch crappie during the day. I haven't fished late at night yet so I don't know if this is true for night time fishing but I do know that these large (to me, anyway) bass have not frightened the crappie away from the slips I fish. I have also caught bass and crappie from the same brush piles during the day. But it is entirely possible they may be full from all the bait fish available during the night when they normally feed so they will not bite as well during the day.

Turning them off hurts the area. Leaving it on 365 days a year, the fish learn its there and gravitate to it. I know what Im talking about
