Who here would participate in an alligator gar tournament all texas waters would be legal only rid and reel fishing to meet up and weigh fish in at the 287 ramp in Corsicana weighing the fish in alive would be ideal however any and all dead fish would be turned over to parks and wildlife for their research and studies that are currently ongoing. 3 man teams 24 hours 8 am on a Saturday till 8 am Sunday. 2 fish limit
If there is enough interest I will get everything organized for either later this year or sometime next year

I think it would be fun to do an online tournament...as in, you take a picture of the fish with the measuring tape and a current newspaper in the photo to verify when the fish was taken. Just a thought. Also allows people to release the fish.

Ideally all fish would be released with proper measurements taken as well as certified weights

I like the idea, I just don't know how someone would keep one alive that long. I wouldn't participate, simply because I don't eat them and have no way to keep one alive. I think it's going to be hard to find very many people that target Gar in a close radius to Corsicana. Was trying to think of a way to get more people involved.

I think a more generic "rough fish" tourney would be better, and hold it from the bank as well. Kind of cool to count anything "not a game fish" for a change.

All we need is someone else promoting killing more alligator gar YOU CAN NOT keep one alive very long she will drown out of or in the river and Parks and Wildlife Do Not need any for research they get enough dead ones from Bow hunters. ..And you call your self a gator gar guide nice one

Wouldn't it be illegal to catch them somewhere, transport them to Corsicana, then release them there?

I agree it would be nearly impossible to keep one alive for a long period of time, I don't see him promoting killing gar. Wouldn't it be illegal to catch them somewhere, transport them to Corsicana, then release them there? According to the new Zebra Mussel law, that would be correct.

Get your panties out of a wad it was only a suggestion and if you don't want to help the state study these great fish to better protect them it's your loss not going to fight or argue with anyone online it's not worth the time or effort

No I have been in the live fish business most of my life. No one has a live well big enough to hold even a small 60 " gar alive and that would be a little gar and a big live well. As to research for alligator gar how many have you tagged for Parks and Wildlife? I have tagged over 3000 I was the first person to suggest a limit to be placed on them.As for the question of the fish you said you weighed that was 230 lbs +I am sorry if it upset you that your scale has to be off I have the same dimensions on a gar and she weighed 195 lbs on a certified IGFA digital scale. So if that one was 230 + my 200 was maybe 240 + .I am not trying to cause any problems just don't say that I am not for conservative of alligator gar I am the only one that said anything about it for years

I was never upset about the possibility of my scale being off and yes we all know you have done this longer than anyone and yes you tagged a lot more fish than I have for parks and wildlife primarily because I spent 6 of my last 8 years in the military and unable to fish on a regular basis
If you have a better suggestion in regards to a tourney by alleams I'm all ears.... It would be interesting to see what everyone can do fishing with 1-2 other people whom are knowledgable in gar fishing as far as numbers and avg size
Plus we all know that their is more to weight than length and girth primarily what's in the stomach
So please share your ideas for a tournament

I think a Gator Gar Competition is a good idea! I agree that keeping a gar alive for any extended period of time, would be a tall order. Also, the participation would be greater, if you were to hold a Alligator Gar "Fishoff", much like the catfish guys do from time to time. This would give the "Livingston" and "Falcon" area guys the opportunity to participate. Maybe run it August thru September? A control item would be designated and required in photos of the fish, along with measurements..... ALL FISH WOULD BE RELEASED IMMEDIATELY. I am a complete noob when it comes to AGAR but I think this would be a fun way to get folks into the sport. We have the best gator gar fishery in the world, right here in our back yards....

Ya know, it's getting pretty old watching people personally attack Kirk for his commercial fishing of Alligator Gar, which I understand he no longer condones nor participates in. I'm pretty sure every Bowfishermen brings that up since they have no other ammo to use against his conservation approach. The tagging studies and data provided to the Texas Parks and Wildlife by him are far more valuable than anything anyone else has provided. The past is the past, and all that matters is what we do now. Hey, at least all those fish he caught during those years weren't dumped in a hole and wasted.
I'm sure there is dirt you can dig up on any one of us here. At lease most of us can hide behind a screen name, including myself.

Mark your right I did that is how I learned how to catch big fish like I do. As slim said I never dumped a single fish On the bank to rot and I am willing to bet not a single bow fishermen can say that. I am not against bow fishing but I was smart enough to realize that you can not keep killing big fish and still have them around for others to enjoy. As for the keeping the fish alive no one has a live well big enough for even a small gar to keep alive. So before you assume anything about me knowing how to keep fish alive I was in the live fish business for most of my youth till i started guiding in 1999 so I know about keeping fish alive. I am not trying to bash any one just don't tell me that you can keep a 72 " which is a small gar alive in the boat.
