My foot controlled trolling motor has become more and more difficult to change direction. What can I do to fix this. if the cable is straight it is easier, but that is impractical for normal use. That makes me think its the cable, not the foot pedal. can I oil it or some other maintenance, or do i need to replace the cable? Its probably 5 years old.

you could try to oil it but may be best to just replace them. if they have kinked its time to replace anyway

Newer motorguides are adjustable for tension on the cable. Sounds like you need to back it off, too much tension on it. You did not provide make or model so this is only a guess.
