 Unusual catch from the bank

Was bass fishing along the bank on Saturday and wasn't having much luck. Did catch this fish which totally inhaled my spinner lure. Not the best picture since I was fishing solo. I think it is a bowfin?? but if anyone thinks otherwise please discuss. 
It was a different world when we were boys and girls....

Looks like dinner!  Just kidding! Definitely a bowfin and I'd say its a big one. Awesome catch!

That's a bowfin or a Grinnel as some call them.

+1 You can eat them. I enjoy catching them and used to be very upset at folks when they would toss them on the bank when I lived in GA.

Thanks for the video Nimrod, it was neat, but i don't think i will be eating any bowfin (or whatever you call them) anytime in the near future.
Yeah they are nasty. This one kept biting and snapping at my needlenose pliers when I was trying to remove the lure, so I didn't bother handling it with my bare hands. Its teeth cut the line but fortunately after on the back. After a slight nudge by my boot into the water, it was released to terrorize some more.
It was a different world when we were boys and girls....
