I've recently started fishing a dropshot, with some success (although I'm plagued by small fish).

I've been using an old cheap-o Shakespeare spinning rod & reel and while it works OK, it really doesn't have much feel. I'm wondering if the technique specific dropshot rods really make a difference. Yes, I know that sometimes you can catch them with a cane pole, but I don't mind dropping the extra dollars if it makes a lot of difference.

I'm thinking the 7'2" Compre rod with a Sahara 2500. I don't mind the price if it really makes a lot of difference.

Also, I've been using braid with a flouro leader - would straight flouro in 10# or less be a better line selection?

I have a Falcon Cara 7' Med-Heavy spinning rod, nice soft tip for a light weight. I also use a 7' Med-Heavy G-Loomis GL3 spinning that is not so soft but is great for heavier weights in deeper water.

Good luck!

I use a Dobyns 701 for Drop Shot. If they tap it I want to feel, but if they just mouth it I don't want them to drop it before I can smarten up and realize I have been bit.

I have never had luck with straight fluro. a few pros go straight fluro, if braid to leader is the way to go for Shin Fuake, then good enough for me. smile In clearer water not around heavy structure put a long 10' + leader. If fish places like Fork with less clear water, go with a shorter 18" leader or so.

I've been looking near and far! Best rod I've picked up so far was the 13 omen 7"1 M for 100 bucks but going to look at my last rod tomorrow at fun n sun for the irod freds finesse 7"1 m for a buck 50! It's between the two that I've picked up! And I've looked at everything from ducket(which all my rods are), gloomis, falcon, st criox, dobyns and everything in between! I did like the dobyns champion series but not going to spend 250 on a rod I will hardly use!

I use a Dobyns DX 702 it is a Med.Lt. rod and is very sensitive. The only thing it isn't is cheap. I use 8lb. Flouro for Drop shotting.

that's my whacky worm rod and sometimes get away with using it for drop shot.

I believe a good hook hanger (should I say "weight hanger") is very important on a drop shot rod. I have a Kistler KLX drop shot rod that has a hook hanger and a weight hanger.

great point Richie! the Dobyns 701's do, but not the 702's I've got. my 701 weight hangar broke off though and hair bands just don't work perfect.

I have been tempted to try Orochi, I'm just a huge Dobyns fan.

Have you tried the Orochi jerkbait rod (baitcaster)?

I use a 7Ft med heavy bait casting rod, you don't always have to use spinning gear

Reel Time Rods made my drop shot rod and it is amazing. He used a Bushido Blank with the Microwave Guides. It is extremely light with a super soft tip but incredible backbone for landing the big ones. I combined it with the Okuma Helios Hx-25s to make a feather weight combo.
If you want to check it out let me know. If you get one of these in your hands you are going to want one.
I also use braid or nanofil with a flouro leader.
