Rented a pontoon boat with inboard on Texoma yesterday with the family and kids friends. Smoke started pouring from engine compartment, got family all in jackets and front of boat in case need to abandon ship, emptied 2 fire extinguishers on it followed by lake water to knock it out then dropped anchor. Two guys in bass boat ran our way to see if any help needed and stayed with us till marina came out to tow back in. I had asked where extinguishers were prior to leaving dock but actually thought more likely to have to show to Dale Moses than to use them on a fire. Everybody safe and kids now have a great story to tell !!

Should not have had to get the family in life jackets, should have been wearing them from the start.

Your boat, your rules.....I'm not making everybody on a 27ft pontoon boat wear life jackets all day, nobody 12 or under so I'll just stick with the TPW rules, if they change it to everybody wears jackets at all times then fine, all jackets were on deck in arms reach. Or just make a rule that the boats aren't allowed to burn, that should solve the problem.....

I like the rule about boats not allowed to burn. That would solve a lot of issues. But really, at 11 MPH, .....you know, speed kills.

Are we not glad that having a extinguisher in a boat by law is forced on us.

Not the day you planed I'm sure. Glad everything ended well and thankful for the guys in the bass boat that came over to help if needed. We need more people on the water like that.

Years ago saw a fiberglass ski boat burn to water level on Lake JB Thomas in just a couple of minutes, was amazed how quick it burned. After that my plan if on a fiberglass boat that catches fire, I was grabbing my life jacket and start swimming and not mess with the "required" fire extinguisher.
