I live in a modest mass produced cookie cutter starter home in a large sub division in crossroads/ little elm area. My kitchen - dineing room - living room is all large room . I do not have a vent a hood or vent over the stove and when cooking can be a night mare with the smoke and such. I was thinking about adding some vent fans like you find in bathrooms over the stove. I found a large one that moves plenty of air and isn't very loud. My question has to do with codes when I go to sell it. Is this a addition that would be allowed or would I have to do somthing else? Would it have to be vented to the outside or just up to the attic to one of the roof vents?

you can add it to the ceiling away from the stove and be within code, vent to the outside for best results.
I would place it over the sink area and vent to soffit exhaust.
switch it off your lights but separate circuit, you will have full power available at the light switch so you can add a dbl box and just jump to the new switch.

if you are not comfortable with electricity hire an electrician.

I added an above the range microwave with a vent built in. It's on an exterior wall so I just ran the pipe straight through the wall to the outside. They make a vent cover specifically for that application. It didn't cost that much and vents outside. Will see if I can find any pics.

Here are a couple of pics of what I did. Note the custom paint job on the vent. smile Just an idea for you.

Thanks for the pics. I can't do that with my house though. The wall the microwave shares a wall with my master bedroom. The only way is up..

You can run a similar vent straight up through the roof. It's just a little more complicated.
