Would anyone here choose this over getting a Yamaha or Mercury? Says 500 hours no dealer scheduled maintenance http://www.evinrude.com/en-us/engines

Just in case you missed it, we have heard all of this before. I would think about one after they have been on the market for 7 or 8 years. Trick is saying scheduled maintenance. Believe me their is going to be plenty of service in 500 hours. Looks like the cowling comes off in pieces unless those are fake screws. But I am not a fan of the Suzuki, E-tec or the SHO.

Gary, Just got back from the release of this motor. It is a game changer for sure. It comes factory with 5 years warranty, 5 years corrosion warranty and no service for 5 yrs or 500 hours. It's the real deal. 600 ft. of torque, 20% better fuel economy than the existing E-Tecs! We all have reservations about the new kid on the block but I personally feel BRP has done enough R & D on this motor to make it right the first time! Time will tell.

I heard that it is a Rotax powerhead. It makes since BRP owns Rotax and Evinrude.

It is not a Rotax product. It is redesigned 2 stroke, in a big way, new heavy duty l/u, power steering components and new powerhead design. Also to compliment the motor they have a couple of new designed props.

It may just be me at 539lbs for a 200 that is heavy compared to my 2.5 litre Merc. For me it does not add up increased weight of boat to carry the extra weight of the outboard same HP = slower. I could be wrong it won't be a first.

it will all come down to the price an average joe will have to pay for it if it is 4 to 5 k more than a merc or Yamaha it will be an uphill push. etechs have been around a while when you go to a tournament with 50 or more entries do a quick count they don't have many there.

The last "game changer" I remember being introduced had considerable growing pains. I would guess this one will have the same. I will sit on the sidelines for a while and see how this one goes.

Everyone that is touting this motor now is regurgitating what Evinrude is putting out there. It may be all that, but right now it is a motor no one has really seen or run. I heard all this "game changer" BS when the SHO came out. I am betting Yamaha would do the introduction a little bit differently after the growing pains it had. I, for one, want to sit on the sidelines, let the early adopters take this thing out, and I am going to listen for the pops. If I don't hear too many, then maybe I will look at it closer. Personally, I do not like the look, but then that is a personal preference. I have never been passed by an Evinrude and never plan to be, but I wish them luck with what seems to be a slightly new concept.

With your boat the number of boats passing you is not about how fast they can go but how much you can stand to stomp on it.
