I posted a pic in the sunfish section...

http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/10069146#Post10069146

And now I'm confused.

Everything I've always been taught, along with tons of internet sources (including TPWD website) says that flat-head, yellow cat, opeluesa, and mudcat are all the same fish.

Are they not? could you share some reliable source information. I feel sheepish now, cuz I've always been confident in my species identification, and now I'm not so sure.

Mud cat and flatheads are not the same. Mud cats aren't considered game fish.

Could you tell me what distinguishes a mudcat from other species, please? I'm trying to improve my knowledge base... lol

Edited due to stupidity on my part. Sorry. lol...

Earlier in the sunfish thread, I was thinking it was a "bullhead" and I posted it was a mudcat. I always thought "mudcats" & "bullheads" were the same thing?!? Now I'm confused.... lol...

Ok. So I took this little fella to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries this morning. The aquatic biologist, on staff there, identified my fish as a "Yellow Bullhead". Evidently, some folks call bullheads "mudcats", and I didn't know that. In my neck of the woods, "mudcat" is another name for flatheads.

I find it funny how we all have different "names" for fish. Especially when, as in this case, different folks have the same name for 2 different fish.

O well. Live and learn!

Thanks for all the input. I think this little guy is gonna be the start to that "Texas Native Species" home aquarium I've always wanted!

FYI
They grow to 5#
If caught in fairly clean water bodies they eat just as good as channel cat.
They both eat the same trash.

I don't mind the fact that we call any sunfish/bluegill a "perch" around these parts, but it's still funny to see anglers swear up and down that a "yellow cat" is not the same species as a flathead catfish. wink

In New England, bullheads are called horned pout. I'd tell you what I call them if it weren't for the dreaded Wall.
