I was using corn today at grapevine, fishing for carp. So my line tightens up, I set the hook and the fight is on. This fish is peeling drag like crazy (this was 4lb test but still) and putting up a hell of a fight, so I figure its a nice size common...Until it leaps out of the water and its green. I didnt get too good of a look at it, but im pretty sure it was a big LMB- but is this even possible on corn? I couldnt believe I lost it and to top it off I lost a rod later when something pulled it into the water faster than i could react- I even swam after it but it was gone. So I ended up with one 3lb buffalo that I caught by accident - he must have just been stupid or something cus I was just checking on my bait and then there he was on my hook, not really fighting till the end...I'm going to eat him.

I've caught bass on corn on a number of occassions...Ask Donnie! Lol.
But, all those times were while I was reeling it in. The bass just saw something yellow moving and nailed it lol. None of them ever peeled any drag though, but then again they were all under a pound.
Are you sure it was actually green? Sometimes buffs have a really green sheen to them, but then again, they don't normally jump out of the water. Drum sometimes have oddly colored sheens as well, and they'll take corn and leap once in a while.
But if it looked like a bass, it probably was! Poor thing must have been starving LOL.
Damn, you lost a rod? Really sorry to hear it! That's happened to most of us, though I've been lucky enough to leap into the water and catch mine in time. Mike Ryan lost one, but managed to snag it, and pull it back in with another rod! Carp was still on it too.
That's why I always try to secure my poles as best I can.
At least you caught the one fish! And after all that, I'd say you definitely deserve to eat that buff! Have you had buffalo before? Real boney, but very good meat.

I've caught a few bass while using dough bait. I've had a few hits while reeling in, but all my bass on carp bait have been stationary, while on the bottom. I think all the bass on dough bait I've caught have been at the Lewisville barge. I caught 2 bass in one tournament at Lewisville, and I've heard other stories at the barge of catching bass while carp fishing. There have also been the renegade flathead caught on dough bait, which is odd as well.
My theory is that the game fish are going after shad and the shad are going after the bait. The thing is, it's never been a foul hook...allways in the mouth. I know that shad will bite on dough bait, because I, as well as others, have caught large shad on carp baits. I believe that it was a bass, though it's a rare occasion. I'm sure people who've fished the barge will back me up on this... on a rare occasion, you'll catch a bass on carp bait.

The way it jumped im sure it wasn't a buffalo. And I definetely wasn't reeling in, it just took the corn like a carp. Very strange but im pretty sure it really was a bass and a big one at that. And as far as the ultralight I lost, I won't be needing that where I'm going(and it was a pretty cheap one). Hoping to hit some shark fishing this weekend soon as I get back to Houston, but i'll be back to the freshwater next fall.

Hey hardheadeater,
Better hope I don't find it....my most productive rod of this spring has been a rod someone fished out of the cliffs. I put a new rod tip on it, put a cheap spinning reel that was clearanced for $7, and it's works like a charm.
