Thanks Wayne P. and Jamoke.
Now there is a bigger problem - fitting the 1199ci into my Ranger Reata 210. It barely fits between the windshield and steering wheel. The bracket is the problem. I would use the factory gimbal bracket, mounted flush against the dash but it sticks too far out - the head almost hits the steering wheel. I need a shorter bracket since the head will sit parallel to the dash. Anyone heard of a tighter bracket? I have looked at the various Ram Mounts and the Balzout brackets but they just take up more real estate. Flush mount would be great if there were not so many gauges in the way.
Jamoke - is it worth getting the Link feature then? I had an I-Pilot on my last boat and thought it was great. The spot lock and autopilot features were the maim features I used. Was hoping that the Link would be even better.

Again, I was very excited about having the follow the countour feature. Until I actually used it. TOO Prescise, takes a close look at your contour lines, EVERY Little turn, right left, foot by foot. It is truly Nauseating, loud and nerve racking and it almost pitched me out of the boat. when the boat starts turning left, you tend to lean against the turn, then it abruptly turns right, then left again. I have not used it since the 1st 4 times when it was a novelty. No one in the boat appreciates that much variabilty while fishing. JMO.

Think there may be a way to mount the 1199.
Option 1 is to flush mount into a metal plate away from the dash so the gauges can stay intact and only partially obstructed.
Option 2 is to cut back the factory gimbal mount and use some stainless hardware to piece it back together.
Either way should work fine and get the 1199 into a tight spot that does not obstruct vision.

Used option 2 and came out great. Put steel plate into dash, then mounted cut back gimbal mount directly onto dash. Spaced out from dash 1/2" with doubled up marine plywood from West Marine.
Is there some secret to getting power wires from the front of a Ranger boat back to the battery? This boat is filled with foam. Somehow need to get wires routed to the dash also.

Turn off DI Enhance Sharpness
Thanks that fixed it. What's the point of having the feature of I can't use it?

I have an 898 with a y cable and 2 transducers, the digital depth seems to lock up and display an erroneous depth. It will finally update the depth but it may take 10-20 seconds. It shows the same thing in SI mode and DI mode.
Ideas?

I'm having a hard time making a decision . Wanting to spend around 1000.00 on HD SI unit. Here's the problem. I'm a crappie fishing person in a small boat, small lakes, trolling motor only. I need a graph that works well at slow trolling motor speeds. Any help would be great.

I am now looking to rig a new boat with electronics. What would be your dream setup of Humminbird, Lowrance, or a combination, of electronics? Thank you.

I have been through this topic completely (yes all 75 or so pages) and I have a question. I have a 998C HD SI combo at the console and a 788CI DI Combo on the bow networked together with Ethernet. In this forum and others I have seen the pictures of DI and sonar of both Lowrance and HB and it seems to me that the Lowrance images seem to be so much better as far as showing fish above a brush pile or among the branches of a tree. I have watched hours of Doug V. videos and searched the web for proper setup and settings. I have been on the lake numerous times and have tried a myriad of settings to both SI, DI and Sonar and just haven't stumbled onto the results I'm expecting and when I have caught fish it has been because "that looks like a good place to fish." My HB has not helped me at all. Now I'll be the first to admit that more than likely I'm like a dog watching TV. I know somethings there I just don't know what it is. I cannot get the images that I see on forums of the Lowrance images. It has been suggested that I leave the tackle at home and cruise the lake learning my HB units. It sounds good, but, unless I have someone with me that can point to the screen and say "those are fish" it seems pointless. I'm back to the dog watching TV again. I'm beginning to believe that either something is wrong with my equipment or I should have bought Lowrance. Honestly the stories of poor service is what scared me away from Lowrance and to HB.
I keep reading that the chart speed is the number one mistake people make with their units. That not matching the boat speed with the chart speed. I saw a post by Doug V. where he showed 3 or 4 pictures of DI and each picture was a faster chart speed. You could see the tree branches open up and he (DV) said that a faster chart speed would help you see the fish among the branches. Was that a specific scenario? Seems like I'm getting conflicting info as to chart speed. The next time I go out I'll take some screen shots and post them here. One suggestion. When you guys post a picture it would be helpful if you could also post the settings that you were using. I have seen HB pictures of fish among branches and on brush piles (doesn't seem to be as sharp and detailed as Lowrance but good enough) so I know it's possible.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. Pay attention to what Doug shows in his videos. Your dog will hunt if you let it. His videos are with Side Imaging equipment. The Down Imaging units produce a clearer DI image than the SI units since the SI unit's DI view is computer generated using the two SI crystals. The DI unit has a dedicated down looking sonar crystal. The operation methods are the same.

I have 998C SI combo with a Humminbird XHS 9 HDSI 180 transducer. What transducer should I choose under the sonar menu?

my transducer that is mounted in the bottom of my boat is bad. i switched around the cables so that my 2d sonar runs off the back transducer that i have below the transom but that leaves my SI/DI not working. my question is, is there a way that i can use the back transducer for everything with out having to replace the bad transducer in the boat?
thanks

thanks A Side Imaging transducer has two Imaging crystals and a 2D crystal. If you just want to use the SI tranducer for all, remove the Y cable and just have the SI transducer plugged directy into the display. If the SI transducer is mounted correctly for on-plane depth performance with your hull it should work OK.
