Thank you for the info Mark. That should clear up some misconseptions and urban legands about the White Amur. Maybe they can do some good and eat some of the hydrilla. Have you heard if they are going to put them in Lake Austin or is the water too cold? Elzie

I wish all these friggin' newspaper articles would stop calling these White Amur "Carp". Gives Commons a bad name.
Also, that other article is very interesting. I had no idea that White Amur had such trouble reproducing in anything but ideal environments. Something to to keep in mind and point out when neccassary to those who don't know.
And now I really want to try eating one!

They are in Lake Austin, and they are about to stock more to manage the salad.

Yes, I want to eat one too... I always thought the "grass carp" White Amur were in our waters already and had to be introduced by lake owners one by one because they were sterile (think mule) and that was the reason why you do not want to be caught in possession of one because it is someone's investment and "tool"... I guess I can't believe everything I heard growing up in East Texas (Tyler)... now I know you don't want to be caught with one because of the "snakehead" theory. Then again the above applies to the triploid grass carp which makes things even more confusing for the public. And to make matters worse here is what TPWD says about keeping them: "Grass carp are potentially harmful to native resources. Currently, only triploid (sterile) grass carp are legal for use in Texas, and a permit is required to obtain them. Because grass carp is a potentially invasive species, an angler who catches one must immediately remove the intestines, except in waters where a valid Triploid Grass Carp Permit is in effect. In those waters, any grass carp caught must be immediately returned to the water unharmed. The herbivorous feeding habits of this species make it very difficult to catch. When landed, grass carp are excellent table fare despite their bones. The rod-and-reel record in Texas stands at 44 pounds. A specimen in excess of 65 pounds was landed by a bow fisher."

They need to do something about the hydrilla in lake tyler east. It's weird, lake tyler east is getting overrun with hydrilla and lake tyler doesn't have any.

Mark they are connected by a canal. Though two lakes, they are joined and fish can pass between.

You are correct brewboy. The hydrilla has actually made its way into the channel and all the way to the entrance to lake tyler, but it just stops right there.
