On the advise of all you great TFFers I went out and bought two Spro babby frog poppers and goggled "How to fish a frog". I wade fished Gibbons Saturday morning, only got 4 strikes and still no hook set.
So I fished a pond this morning. For the first hour it was more of the same. Only 5 strikes and no hook sets. Now I'm up to only about 15 strikes on the frog and haven't hooked a single one. I'm frustrated and about to give up. So I changed my presentation again. Started to let the frog set for 30 seconds after I threw it out before I started my retreive. And thank God for one persistant little bass. He took the frog 4 times and I finally hooked him.

I ended up catching 10 in the next hour and a half!!! This is what I am now doing. Please provide suggestions for improvement.

Presentation: Throw parrallel to shoreline > wait 30 seconds > twitch, wait a couple mores seconds > retrieve with rod low, 3 short soft pops with the rod tip (not a loud hard pop)> pause a second > repeat
Hookset: Wait for the bass to move the line laterally then set the hook by reeling and sweeping the rod up and away in the opposite direction the fish is moving

When you missed did the body of the frog kind of clump up or hang up on the hooks? It happened to me with those spros, a little upward bend in the hooks with a pair of pliers solved that and seemed to improve my hookups.

Yes it did clump up. I kept squeezing the frog before every cast to insure the hooks weren't buried in the body. Good advise, thanks.

Yes, bend the hooks out slightly, not too much so the frog stays weedless. Also trim 1 leg shorter than the other to help the walking action.

As the Great Cody "Frogman" Malone would say count to 2 then rip his lips.

You could just add the frog tail hook and significantly increase your hook up ratio.

Does the frog tail hook increase the chances of Hang-ups?

Im not a very good bass fisherman yet but I have confidence in the spro frog.

Sounds like your presentation is right if you're getting blow ups. Count to three slowly before you set the hook. I wouldn't really worry about looking at slack in the line. If you have too much slack before setting the hook, you're working it wrong. Just count to three. You'll want to set the hook sooner because it feels like forever.

I don't wait to move the frog and have caught hundreds of frog fish over the years. Some of my most explosive hits and largest fish happen right after it hits the water or immediately after the first movement. Case in point, the zoom horny toad or similar frogs, or just buzz baits in general. If you wait on those baits, they sink and get hung up or take too long to surface again. In my opinion, you are wasting your time and limiting yourself to less casts. Sounds like the problem was your hookset timing which is a very normal problem for people starting out with frogs. That being said, I do either throw to the bank and drag or pop the frog into water or I throw well past my intended piece of cover, similar to most other reaction baits. Just my opinion though, but based on experience and I'm a frog lover.

On the spro I hook 9 outa 10 fish that is my new favorite bait. All I can say is pop the [censored] out of it when you get a blow up as soon as the fish pulls set the hook.

Thanks, great input, keep it coming.

Criglizard, The problem I was having was all 15 of those first strikes came as reaction strikes. I was not getting any strikes on the retrieve. After I started waiting for the ripples to clear and then retrieving I started getting strikes on the retrieve. Maybe I just got better and the retrieve but it seemed to be a key to getting strikes today.

I like the idea of bending the hooks out slightly. Going from waiting 2 seconds to waiting 3 will feel like a lifetime to set the hook, LOL!!

Thanks as always TFF Members. I always appreciate how everyone is treated with respect on this site. And information is shared freely.

From the feedback I would take a few key points.

1) My fishing techinique in general needs to improve. Making sure I don't give to much slack when I drop the rod tip before setting the hook.

2) Patience, wait an extra second and feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook.

3) Set the hook with force. This one is a problem as I tore something in my elbow. This maybe my major issue. Might have to switch the handle on my spinning reel over to the other side to change the arm I set the hook with.
