I would they are about the same. I own both. You will be disappointed after using the tourney pro though. I have tournament MG, speed spools, BPS proqualifier, and tourney pro. Hands down the tourney pro. The Speed Spool only has the magnetic brake as opposed to both in the TP. The drag is only 10lbs in the SS.

The speed spools are better imo fit the hand better and are great reels.no they aren't a tourney pro with a 14lb drag and dual breaks but still great. Lews customer service alone would make me purchase over bass pros. I've also owned both and don't think you'll be disappointed. Both my pro qualifiers anti reverse went out. I've been hammering one of my speed spools for over a year now with no problems. The entire lews line up is great. I don't recommend the laser series though. The graphite frame has way to much flex. As for the drag I haven't had it slip once and I haven't even needed it torqued to max drag.

I got a SS1HL (lefty) for over a year now and have used it in fresh and salt. Simply an awesome reel, very forgiving in the wind yet will cast smoothly and with great distance. Highly recommended! Thanks to your post, I just ordered another new off ebay for <$79. With the $20 rebate getting the price now to $60, I'm one happy camper

The speed spool is a good reel but not what the tournament pro is. FYI I've got them for $83.98 Ron

I have been perusing this site for many years. Retired 10 years ago and initially spent many hours enjoying stories, ordering custom lures, buying and selling tackle, etc. Recently, I thought I would check this great site out once again and came across this thread on Lew's reels. I formerly worked at a sporting goods/boat dealership as the manager in the 70's when the original Lew's Speed Spool BB-1's hit the market. I quickly traded my 5000C's and 5000's for a couple. An innovation had hit the market. I loved the ease of cupping the reel, the smoothness and distance of the cast and used them exclusively other than my 5500C's for worming. I have the first pair to this day along with custom made 5 1/2' rods. I also purchased 6 of the 25 anniversary models from a TFFer, of which I have sold 4 to other TFFers. They retailed for $150, I believe. Hard to believe that Lew's can offer a serviceable, competitive reel in today's market of $150 - $450 reels. I may to check one of them out? Good reading../Mike)

That's actully the laser with a graphite frame which actully is still a good reel. Especially for the price. How's the combo treating ya forkduc?
