Hi ya'll. I haven't posted in a while but I always follow this part of the forum. I plan on getting out of the house this weekend a.m. for a rookie bank carpin' trip to G'vine... I'm new to the carp scene (not to the lake though) and plan on cornin' it for a few hours with my spinning rods(non-carp rods that is)... any hints/reports on where might be my best bet for them?

(when kayaking fishing I've ran into some huge gar in Marshall Creek but not too many carp)

I'd go to McPhearson Slough. I put in a few gallons of maize on Monday and saw a LOT of carp out there yesterday. You'll see maize right on the bank in the area that I baited, though I put a lot in so I baited a pretty wide area. What time are you going? I live right down the road, maybe I'll join you.

If you get a chance to fish with Mark, ( SSF ), Dangermon, take it! He'll definitely get you into some carp, or at least give you the tricks of the trade if the fish aren't cooperating lol.

Carp can often be caught anywhere in the Murrel Park area, but coming from Keller, McPhearson Slough is probably a lot closer and easier to reach for you. Plus if Mark's baited it up then that's probably your best best!

Smells,

What day and time will you be there? I'm going out in the boat for a try at crappie Thursday and Friday and I might drop by to practice my carp fishing for awhile. If I remember correctly, there's lots of good places to beach my boat in McPhearson. (With the water level like it is there's lots of good places to beach the boat everywhere! smile )

I was going to drop some range cubes at the cliffs Thursday evening before I put the boat up then fish it Friday morning. If you are going to be at McPhearson I'll just come over there.

Kevin

Thanks for the input ya'll. I'm still figuring out final plans and definitely enjoying this cold air... Now, I have to go find out McPherson slough location... if I go I will be there Saturday a.m until about noonish... still looking at a couple of other "swims" (new found carp terminology... hahaha) in my area at a large pond but unsure of the numbers of carp there... it's so close to my house its hard not to even try. I'll let ya'll know if it is productive. I want to hear my line scream! Seems fitting for so close to Halloween smile

Also, it sure is hard finding #6 circle hooks at BPS. Man! I'm going to hit Academy on my lunch break.

Thanks again guys.

If you're in Keller, go to Cabelas. The have the small hooks you're looking for.

BPS carries #6 circle hooks. You might need to look in the salt water section to find them.

Cabelas has size 6 circle hooks amongst the rest of the freshwater hooks (they're made by Gamakatsu, I think). The smallest circles I've found at Academy are size 2.

dangermon, Anytime you want a fishing partner post here. We love those little ponds, they hide big fish. Kevin, I'm helping Donny move a washer/Dryer that I'm loaning him on Saturday and plan to squeeze some fishing in whenever I can. The slough is 10 minutes from me so I would guess early afternoon, maybe 1 or 2? I bet the crappie are getting into the slough too now. I'd love to join you one day. Got some Jig Um's that I need to use this season. If we meet up one day I'd like to move the brush pile back into the water if you'd help. 3 or 4 trees are on the bank right now. We can relocate them and you can mark em for the crappie to come soon. I tried it with my kayak but that didn't work out for me.

Mark if you are wanting to move those out into the water you should ask someone with a boat smile .

Well since my "friends" never make it out to fish... haha. You got that boat and I have yet to see it. Time for some crappie and/or sandies on the vine!! After the ToC its crappie time in the slough.

Well, just got back from BPS and finally found some Owner Mutu Light Circle Hooks #6... it took a while for me to explain to the nice guy that helped me #6 not 6/0 (stop me if I'm wrong here). Thanks for the the tip. Also, I couldn't help but try the marked down to $.99 Dynamite Carp Dough Bait "Strawberry". I'm not sure how good it is but as others posted.. I stayed far away from all the Berkely Power Bait Carp... too bad... they usually have a superior product and I always fish PB Grubs but I will take others' advice... I plan on using sweet corn... now I gotta rig my spinning rods and fix my rod holders for horizontal... and I think I will try the bite indicator bobber-swivel trick since I don't have the long skinny rods. I'll post results if I get any...

You could try calling sometime! Although the same could be said for me as well. Always game for a good day of fishing just let me know. Hopefully things will get sorted out soon and I will be spending much more time in the DFW area.

Glad you were able to find what you needed. The Owner Mutus are pretty nice, I personally like the Gamakatsu Octopus Circles. I mostly buy them at Sportsmans Warehouse, and Cabela's, cause like you I had trouble finding them at BPS.

Some of us would love to fish that pond with you hehe. I love fishing small bodies of water, ponds, creeks, small rivers, great stuff.

Bring a camera when you go, and if you land any carp, get some pics!
