Local bait shop is sold out of shiners but they have black saltys, do they work for stripers?

Caught a few on black saltys but I would definatly rate them lowest on a live bait for striper scale.

I read an article that said black salties are a type of genetically engineered gold fish that could be a problem in fresh water.

You'd be better off spending some time with an ultralight rod catching small sunfish for live bait. Striper & hybrid will gobble those up.

They are horrible. Tried them last night as a last resort, we drifted over school after school, and nothing. Might have gotten hit once.

Personally I think they are to dang active. Those little bastages go crazy. I think hybrids and stripers can't catchem.lol I don't know why they don't work well. They look good and are hardier than all get out. I have a friend who uses them on trotlines and he says he has caught some did stripers on them. I always figured he is using those big hooks and it slows them down.

They are good baits for striper, and they stay alive a lot longer than shiners.

Well I gave em a shot today and although i didn't spend much time actually striper fishing (due to the wind) i did catch one 30' 12lb'r on one. So, i guess they do work, probably not as well as shiners or shad but hell they work.

Bait List

1. Gizzard
2. Threadfin
3. Shiner
Tied for forth would be black salty and fried chicken bone

I once cleaned a chicken breast bone out of a larger stripers gut. We were eating fried chicken sitting on the anchor when it was caught. They will eat anything.
