Hey guys
I was planning on going down to Surfside this weekend for litte surf fishing. I heard the seaweed was really bad and caked all along the beach. Anyone have any eyewitness reports?
Thanks

I can't speak for Surfside, but the sargassum weed was something else in the Corpus Christi area. It was so thick in places I could have probably crossed the channel walking on it (exaggeration, but not by much). It's always around, but not in the densities that I've been seeing this year.

Also, can anyone report on the city beach (the one you need the permit to drive). Maybe they have cleaned up the beach a little?

I was at Surfside Beach over Memorial Weekend. The seaweed was about 2 feet deep at the shoreline on the city beach which they require a annual permit to park on. The city was cleaning the beach with a front-end loader and dumping the seaweed on the dunes. Unfortunately, the seaweed was still coming in and backfilling what the city had just removed. It was the equivalent of washing your car in a hurricane. My kids and I walked over the seaweed and jumped into the surf to swim and play. It was like swimming in chunky soup. We are going back this weekend to stay for a week. You can avoid the city beach parking permit by driving a few miles north of the city and entering the beach from there. If the seaweed is still bad, we may try fishing from the jetty or going to the intracoastal waterway.

It is very bad in the surf. Here are a few pics. The jetty is fishing good though. Caught quite a few on 1/2 oz silver spoons tied on 40 pound mono leaders. Using a regular bait caster spooled with 30 pound braid. Cast it. Let it flutter down and stroke it back. They would hit it on the fall. Don't let it his the rocks though. Caught about 8-10 Spanish mackerel in about two hours. ]One jack Son was using gulp on a popping cork with mini leader and 1/4oz jig head. He caught a few also. Spoon worked the best. Also caught a dozen piggy perch.

It's bad. I like to gather it up though and compost it for my garden.
