We were spanking some really nice toads on Sunday June 1st. We had just pulled up on a spot and I caught 7 nice ones on 9 casts so the school was definitely fired up. I was chunking a 10XD on the new heavy crank bait rod by Hook Spit Performance Rods (sponsor plug definitely intended...sorry). I boated a 5-pounder and was so pumped up on adrenaline from such an awesome frenzy that I rushed trying to grab her in the bottom of the boat before she stopped jumping around. She flopped right about the time I reached down there and gaffed me with one of those #2 long-shanked trebles. It was definitely my fault and was a mistake made by me getting too excited and not thinking correctly. Please be careful and let it be a lesson so you don't have to go through what I did. It took us about 20 minutes to get the hook out. Fortunately the hook went all the way through and came back out by the knuckle of my index finger. We tried cutting the entire end of the hook off with my pliers but it broke the cutter inserts off my Gander pliers. We finally figured out that we could break off just the barb and pull the hook back out the same way it came in. I got real dizzy and nauseated and had to lay down in the boat for a couple of minutes, but once it wore off I jumped back up, launched that 10XD back out there on the 8' rod that we designed specifically for that bait, and it was on again! That bait fires up a school better than any other bait I've ever seen. I am in no way sponsored by Strike King. They know nothing about me other than the money we've won chunking their 10XD's. I don't get a discount on their baits. I just talk about them because they are freaking awesome and they really work. I'm passionate about stuff that works...not stuff that people promote because they are paid to do so. If you see me talk about something it's because I've tested it to be the real deal. Enjoy the pics!

Good God! That looks painful. I have kids with me a lot of the time, we don't throw crank baits much because I fear something like that. I need to take a few adult only trips and learn more about deep cranking though. It looks awesome when your not getting stabbed.

At least the barb went out the other side, I'm sure it was/is painful either way! I just showed this to my wife... She said "don't show me those pics!" Ouch!!

Why I always carry a pair of Klein Cutting Pliers. They cost about $30, but will cut an 8/0 Owner with ease. Use 'em to cut hooks out of deep hooked fish sometimes too.

Carry some Klien cutter pliers in the boat. In this case, cut the Treble hook free from the lure, take needle nose pliers, bend the barb back down on the hook that came all the way threw hand or if possible cut the barb off all the way. Take your needle nose pliers, give a pull or piece of fishing line with a fast jerk. It will pop right out. Trust me, the samething happened to me and it was a bigger hook. LOL. I know its painful, but you can do it. I also carry a bottle of Hydrogen Proxide in the boat for cuts, stap wounds like this. Sorry it happened, very nice fish, concrats.
