Gentlemen (and ladies),

I'm here from the bank fishing section of the forum and I am a bass guy. I tried a new place today, a spill way with a lot of current after recent rains. My third cast, it felt as though my spinnerbait walked into a sliding glass door. I thought it was hung up on a log or something, even after I instinctively set the hook.

It started moving and felt heavy. Then my line got wrapped around one, single piece of rebar sticking out of the water as this guy swam past me and away from the spillway/current. It was taking drag and I had to run up a hill and down another to get my line off the rebar. I had at this time realized it was a catfish.

25 minutes later, I got it close enough to the bank to get a few pictures and when it actually got close enough for me to try to land it, the line broke.

Anyway, what type of catfish is this? I'm guessing it was somewhere between 15-20 lbs and was pure black. Sorry I don't have a better picture.

Thank you in advance.

Could be a flathead or a channel, hard to tell from the picture I'm gonna say channel from the look and based on u saying it was pure black.

Great catch no matter which it is, but just based on the size I'd lean towards a flathead. You don't see many channel cats in the 15-20 pound range in Texas.

Sir, you got your self a flathead, I've seen many big flatheads caught off spinnerbaits out on Palestine, three in one day all ranging at 35-40Ibs each. Right out of a creek, great catch by the way, and you have the picture to prove it thumb

Snake heads have scales rolfmao catch a flathead sometime and youll see the difference.
Pay attention to the double hump muscle structure of the dorsal line behind the head
Neither blues or channel have this, upper 1/3rd of the body width is the same width as the head
