Hey guys did a search but couldn't find answer.

Was at RR yesterday and water was clear for a N Tex lake.
In my kayak so limited in places to try. Caught some small fish on first tree I stopped at on bottom at 22 fow.
Went to next trees that were all 12-20 fow and not so much as a tap at all depths. Probably fished 10 more of these shallower depths. Went back to original and caught some more. (All unders).

My question is how critical is depth and will bigger fish be same depth, different tree or maybe different tree different depth.

Couldn't test cause first tree was deepest.

Thanks for the help.

For me, it is a lot about depth. If i catch fish in 8 fow is one location, that depth is where i will start at the next

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

That's the challenge in looking for crappie....
I always start off at 5ft and work my way down.
Of course I do not have electronics...With electronics the search is a bit easier ...

This. If you caught them in 8 feet of water on a tree in 20 feet and the next tree you are fishing is in 25 or 15 feet, start at 8 feet. As the day gets later in the afternoon and you stop getting bit at 8 feet, drop down to 10 and so on until you find where they moved too.

I've been on a fishing binge over the last couple of weeks and fished often since April. What I've noticed is that after fishing every couple of days I saw how the fish moved from shallow to deeper water. So depth is critical and figuring out what depth is best is tricky. Right now I'm finding them at 12-14 FOW not far from where they were a couple of weeks ago in 6-8 FOW.

Same held true with timber fishing. They are transitioning from shallower to deeper water. As summer temps set in, the thermocline will tell you what depth to fish the timber. Also noticed in summer months that trees with green stuff growing around it attracts bait. In the summer if I see small bait fish near the surface of one of those trees, I fish it because it usually produces a couple of two or three slabs.

Best thing to do is spend time on the water and methodically search the timber in the part of the lake you want to fish. Make note of the trees you catch crappie on and look for trees in similar depths and location types. For example, the tree you found fish on may have been close to severe depth change or it may have been the only one within thirty yards of the bank. After a while you will have a good idea of which trees hold fish and depending on the time of year what depth they are most likely to be holding.

I'm by no means an expert so take all that I've said above with a grain of salt. Good luck!

Thanks for the help guys.

wscott

I am assuming the cedars were the ones with lots of small branches and mostly white. I purposely didn't fish those due to all the limbs. Like I said, a crappie noob.
