My family have always kept croaker and eaten them, although not as prized as redfish, we still liked catching them. My buddy considers them trash and immediately throws them back. What do you guys think?

They're great as table fare, great for cut and live bait.
Unless it's an invasive species, I can't understand why anyone would consider it as "trash".

The big ones I keep to eat. The smaller ones I keep for bait. They are a great fish.

I've always enjoyed the fact they always bite so you can take your kids fishing and at least they can have fun catching a lot of fish. Kids don't care what kind of fish they catch as long as something is pulling. I rarely keep fish anymore, so I am fishing for the fun of catching. I compare them to catching white perch because when you get into them, you can catch a lot. The croaker is the only fish that has never skunked me in over 30 years.

I don't care what the trash species is. I have had MANY trips when I would been THRILLED to catch a few trash fish.

Average size and above are great table fare. Release smaller one. They are easy to catch. They are great fish bait to.
Same thing for gafftop.
