I used a 100 gallon horse trough to transport those buffs from GV the other day. Would that be big enough for a 30 lb carp?

Fishlady, are you hooked on this carp and buff thing yet? It's only a matter of time until you hook into a couple biggin's and you'll be an instant convert. I've never introduced carp and buff fishin' to anyone who caught and didn't have a blast. This time of year is when I start getting phone calls from buddies I've taken cuz they're ready to catch carp! Bass fishermen askin' if I'll take them carp fishin! Never thought I'd see the day when I didn't fish for carp, but when you hook into a fish with such strength, you're hypnotized...the rest of the world stands still...and then when you hold the great fish....that's when the love affair takes full force. Doesn't matter how slimy, lol. Hope to see you on the bank soon.

Alan

FireFly -

I also apologize for my earlier tone. In hindsight, I came off as pretty much scolding ya. It is cool that the fish are at Cabela's. I got a bit carried away trying to explain why initial reaction was not 100% positive.

By the way, congrats on your new PB.

Firefly,
I, too, apologize for using the word "stupid". I didn't mean to imply that you are stupid. Seriously, I was trying to get you to think carefully about your replies to other's comments. If you remember, I said "please think about your comments before you post them. You can avoid stirring up trouble that way." I remembered the problems from your December pictures and messages, and the whole thing being deleted from the forum. I didn't follow my own advice to think carefully about my comment to you. If I lived in your area, I would also go by Cabela's to see your buffs. I buy stuff online from them all the time.
Good luck!
P.S. Is Kosmikgerl a friend of yours? She's a good one to have on your side!

Fishlady - A 100 gallon horse trough would probably be big enough for a 30 pound carp, but it depends how far you had to take it. Is the trough aerated?

If you were taking a fish all the way from Austin back to Cabelas, you could have a problem with the oxygen level in the trough water getting a little low, or getting a high build up of other chemicals like CO2 in there.

You'd probably be a better judge, I've no idea how much oxygen a fish that size takes in with each "breath" and how much CO2 it's gills put out or anything.

I know carp can survive at lower oxygen levels then bass, they're better at taking oxygen from water then bass are, which is why they survive in more areas.

But I don't know if 100 gallons would be enough for a 30 pound fish beyond, say, an hour or so.

Never transported a fish that far to keep alive, but I use ice in minnow bucket to help keep them alive. I bet if you did a look-up on a search engine, you'd be able to find out...you'd think anyway. You can buy small aerators pretty cheap...I bought one for under $10 years back to use when I was fishing the barge in dead of winter. But as Starless pointed out, you probably have more experience than we do.
I know that catfish can stay alive for hours if they're on ice alone.
