New to freshwater fishing. This is what I've collected in the last couple of months:
  • Tournament Choice 7' Rod & Baitcaster Reel (6.3:1)
  • 6" worms (white, purple, watermellon flake, watermelon pumpkin, watermelon redflake)
  • Top water lure, 6' diving lure, a buzz bait, couple spinner baits, few jigs, few crank baits in various colors
  • Shad lures, crawfish, flipping tail worm-looking lures

I've been going to Blanco State Park and fish from the bank all up and down the bank. Had 5 or 6 trips so far - each for a few hours at a time and I've fished the following ways:
  • Texas-rig the worms, crawfish, shad, spinning worms, etc.
  • Throw them out into the river, let them sink and hit bottom
  • With rod tip even with my waist, I pull it up over my right shoulder and let the worm or whatever drop to the bottom while I reel up the slack. I repeat this until the worm is on the bank and I reel it up and repeat the whole process
  • With crank baits, I throw out there, reel it in at various speeds, slow, then fast, then stop, then resume, etc.
  • With my big ole buzz bait I cast it out and steadily reel it in. It's heavy in the water and plows through the water making lots of bubbles and flashing
  • With the spinner baits, same as above - throw out and steady retrieve. Can sure see the spinners flashing from a long way out as I reel it in
  • With the jig, I fish it like the worm, hopping it along the way until at the bank to reel up and repeat. Sometimes I straight reel it in after casting
  • The top water bait floats on the water and I vary the speeds at reeling it in. Sometimes I twitch it back and forth, then reel, then stop, then twitch, then reel, etc.

With all the aforementioned techniques, I've gotten ZERO bites - I think. haha I've fish mainly during the middle of the day, (between 10am-3pm). The water there is always clear; however, it looks green from a distance. There's lots of weeds and trees along the bank and seems to be weeds or grass in the river as I frequently pull some green slime off my lures or worms as I drag through different spots.

Am I doing this right? Maybe it's a bad time of year to fish Blanco State Park? Dunno. It's fun trying everything, but after all these trips, I'm getting worried. I know there's bass there because I see small ones follow my worms/lures all the way to the edge of the bank. The check-in ranger's office has a pic of a guy taken a couple of months ago with a HUGE bass.

Any suggestions/critiques?

I will never criticize a man for fishing. The lack of success is unfortunate although my guess is it will only be temporary.
You have a lot of nice equipment to go after those pesky fish. My only minor suggestion might be to go the other direction on your equipment. Pick up a nice whippy ultralight rod and spincast reel. Then get you some small baits. If you can see small fish, you can bet there are bigger ones watching the action.
Have fun out there. Jim

Large mouth bass, I assume?

You may want to try in the early morning, or the evening. Mid day is always tough to catch any fish.

Aww...come on Moon! Spincast reels are just fine for someone new to the sport.

But anyways. Ok, one of your biggest mistakes is when you are fishing. I've fished the hill country for years and know the conditions pretty well. Moon is dead on about the fishing times. Between 10 and 3 is when the morning bite is ending, the sun is highest and all your big fish, especially bass are hiding in the shade of trees or in the undercuts along the bank. Try it in the morning or an hour or so before dark. Now when it is dark if you have a little moon, get out a top water and throw it. Let it sit a good while before you move it at all. At least a minute, then give it just a little bit of a tug, enough to get a hungry bass's attention is all. Wait again for a bit. Then make it swim a short distance real easy like. I assure you there is no more thrilling way to fish than topwaters on a moonlit night. Now another thing to keep in mind is that as you stated, the water is almost always real clear in the streams and rivers in that area. So the bass can see you unless you are pretty stealthy. Try sneaking up behind the tall reeds that are on the bank in a lot of places. Keep noise to a minimum, especially if you are with other people. Nothing will kill the chance of catching a big bass like a little noise. They just turn the other way and go. That's how they got to be "big." Go down to the river after dark with a flashlight and you'll see how many fish are prowling about. Especially catfish. There will probably be a gathering of them directly below the low water dam. And one other thing. If you absolutely want to catch a nice fish there, catch you a few small bluegills...say 25 to 50 cent piece size and fish about 3 feet below a small bobber with a small split shot weight about 10 inches above the hook. This is the main food of these fish. They will go for it. Also, here shortly there should be plenty of those big old yellow grasshoppers about. They are like candy to bass and catfish. Hope I'm not too longwinded. Good luck.

EGAD Davey! You must have been lurking about watching me fish the Hill Country back in the day when I lived in Austin. You just read him all the rules and regulations that apply! WOW!
Now, with the "big ole yellow Grasshopppers",If you want cats, catch those hoppers, smush their heads but leave em on, impale them on a hook and tight line them in the holes where you can't see the bottom in those crystalline waters. Old Russell Tinsley trick(he used to be the outdoor writer for the Statesman in Austin).

Love fishing those crystal clear hill country streams(at leasst back in the day when they had water in em.

Super good advise!

Timing! Timing! Timing! Timing is = failure, or success.

Timing 1, when to go fishing: early morning, or late evening for those illusive big bass.

Timing 2, time to work your lures: as Duckcreek Davy said, sloooooooooow to work your lure sometimes is the key to catch big bass.

ok just a few more things. Sharpen your hooks well. Even the new ones. The big fish have rock hard jaws. Let em run with the bait just a second or so and then set the hook real good. And you'll find that some good stout line is in order to horse those fish out of the river, especially where you have that vegetation growing up close to the shore. They'll bury up in that every time. I've recently been using Seaguar InvizX 100% flourocarbon line and I must say I love the stuff. It cast easy and is really tough line. First flourocarbon I've ever liked. I'd use at minimum 12 lb. test where you are fishing for bass and cats.

Just got off the phone with someone in Fredericksburg. Been raining pretty good there today and was still doing so!

try a weightless worm
more erratic action is more natural presentation
be patient
i use a 7ft medium action spinning rod
perferbally my duckett
6lb test or 8 lb flurocarbon
and 1/0 worm hook
weightless
cast as far as you can
twitch it a few times let its fall slowly
( the bites usually happen here)
then let it fall for 5-10 secs then do the same process
i would twitch it atleast 4 times with the wrist.
goodluck

fishing is one thing. catching is another

Oh, excellent advice, everyone! Thank you very much. Gonna do this starting tomorrow morning!!!

We've been getting tons of rain the last few days so the rivers should really be full. I think more rain is expected today and tomorrow as well.

I always like to throw this in the mix.... if nothing is working.... go extreme! Throw the smallest lure you can buy/find and also the largest lure and see what happens!

I know I haven't posted a lot.....but here goes. Leaf Chaser, if you are fishing the middle of the day, here is another lure you should try, a HOLLOW BODIED FROG, such as a Booyah Pad Crasher. seeing as how the bass are hiding in the cover, or in the shade. I personally have a rod specifically set up for frog fishing. Its a 7' Med-Heavy with a fast action. toss that frog out there near the shade, or in the grass, or better let, lilly pads.....I even went yesterday....and got 3, two 3 lb'ers and one 4 lb'er. and actually there were caught between 2:30 and 4.

for some techniques, there are a ton of them on you tube.....some are very good and informative.
