Does anyone other than me punch a 6 penny casing nail thru the rim on the top of the can? Is that to old school?

Yep. Paint in the rim drains back into the can.

Real painters shake it dry, they don't wipe it! laugh laugh

Seriously, I was taught to dip the brush and shake it vigorously in the can, not to wipe it on the edge of the can. And I've painted hundreds of houses.

But yes, if I'm pouring from a can a hole in the lip will allow it to drain and clean better.
