Hello guys, Looking into maybe getting a kayak for some fishing at the lakes or bay areas. Here is a little something about me. I am 5'10" 258lbs. I know how to swim a little, but will definitly be wearing a pfd. I will only fishing bays and lakes. I have never done been on a kayak. Nor fished from one. I've seen some videos and it looks like fun. I need some input from experience people. Here are some worries. Do yall get tired of sitting down in the kayak? How many hours do yall fish? Is it easy to flip when trying to pull the fish in? I am looking at the pescador 12 from academy and the Ascend FS128T Sit-On-Top Angler Kayak from bass pro. I really would like a hobie, but they are a little pricey. Maybe if I really get into it I wll buy me one. Well thanks in advance Have a great weekend

Hello guys, Do yall get tired of sitting down in the kayak? How many hours do yall fish? Is it easy to flip when trying to pull the fish in? i dont get tired, if i need to stand up i do, or jsut paddle to the bank, i fish 6+ hours per trip usualy, ive never felt like i was going to fall out, only time feels sketchy to me is stand up and looking up at the sky. thats about it for me i have a cuda14, i have had some large waves and what not rock me hard but i know at some point the side of my yak stops it from rolling over its not like being on a log. keep head and shoulders in and your fine. keep calm dont over correct your movments when you feel like your going to tip and you will be golden, my dad went out with me hes not a yaker, hes 6'5 245ish and he did fine.

Well thanks in advance Have a great weekend I have to admit I get tired of sitting but by nature I like standing and walking. I have spent the last 20+ years hiking creeks and fishing. I also have a broken tail bone which does not lend itself to sitting for prolonged periods of time. I started kayaking last year. I bought a Malibu Mini-X to use in rivers and small ponds. The seat I got with it sucked. I bought a better seat and it was fine for a while but on trips longer than about 3 hours it started hurting. This year I have moved up to a Jackson Coosa with a great seat and it makes all of the difference in the world. I fished from it the other day for 6+ hours with little problem. Yes I did get out and walk and fish some but I did that because I like doing that. I do believe I could have spent the whole time in the kayak. My suggestion is to take some time, try out some different kayaks with different seat options before you buy. Don't buy one just because it saves you money. If you end up not liking the seat then it will probably cost you money in the long run.

Thanks for the reply. Where do you fish? Bay areas? Surfside? Thanks

Im in a yak about 4 or 5 days a week some weeks. My advise to butt/back aches is to purchase a FOAM donut seat used for medical reasons. It has made ALL the difference in the world to me. I have been using it for 3 years. Now on that note im 1/2 your size so maybe its a smaller body thing? It costs about $20 so its worth a chance.
As far as stability goes. Just make slow deliberate movements. Don't over reach. Within a few trips out is when you need to worry as you start getting complacent and comfortable. I was scared to death my 1st time out in my old pescador. By the end of the day it was like sitting on your couch. Just be cool and youl be fine.

At 258#, you'll be pushing the limits of a Pescador. By the time you put some tackle/anchor/paddle on board, you could easily be 270#. While the kayak might not sink, you will have water in the cockpit most of the time. Stability will not be as good as it would for a 200# boater. J Barlow has the best advice you can get-get out and try some before you buy.

If I were your size and new to kayak fishing, and wanted to see if I would enjoy the sport without much financial risk, I'd buy a used Wilderness Ride 135. Its been a proven fishing kayak for big guys for many years, there are a bunch of used ones around, and buying second hand you'll probably get back within a 100 bucks of what you paid for it a year from now.

Kayaking is for everyone. You may get a bit tired or sore at first but once you paddle correctly and gain muscle memory you dont get sore or tired. Getting a boat that fits your needs is way more important than getting one that fits a budget. Imo. Its the greatest sport ever.

Whichever kayak you decide to buy, get yourself one of these....You can thank me later! I can fish for hours and my butt don't hurt! It also helps to elevate you just a little and keep your rear dry! I use it driving down to the lake, and then take it out of my vehicle and it goes right onto the kayak seat. It doesn't matter how comfortable you think your kayak seat is, this will make it even better! http://www.amazon.com/RelaxoBak-Tailbone-Orthopedic-Cushion-Guarantee/dp/B001OVFNQA

I never had a problem with my butt hurting. My problem was my foot going to sleep after a while of just sitting. I learned to sit side saddle so I could move my legs and remedy that problem, that's after trying to get out my yak and falling in the water. Oh and I have a perception sport striker 500lb weight cap. 499 for just the kayak. For 599 you get a bending branches angler paddle, and a NRS Chinook PFD. If you join TKF you get a discount as well.

Start out slow. If you have a friend that already kayaks try going out with them a couple times. You don't have to spend a ton of money on your first kayak. Just get a good quality kayak that will serve you well for your needs. Where a PFD and do everything slow and be safe the first couple outing. And beyond all have fun!!!

There are very few people out there who love a pescador more than I do. I think they are the best bang for the buck on the market.....for a little guy like me. I think though you should probably keep looking. They are not the most stable to begin with, even less for a big guy.
