Did Abu Garcia stop making these? I'm new to these reels and really like them. I know you can get used on ebay but is there anywhere to get a new one? I have a bcx and have opened it and see what everyone means its all plastic. I'll use it for channels until it dies. I also have a brand new c3 that is awesome. Just curious if the 6000 has been discontinued forever.

If you are referring to the red "Original" 6000 series reel, yeah. They had dropped it about two cycles ago (about 6 years) when they had introduced the BCX. They are trying to hit the same market with their "S" series, "SX" series, and "STX" series of reels, but they just aren't the same. I would try to stay away from those, just in case. A 2014 C3 is like a 2013 and older C4. It has one anti-reverse bearing, two spool bearings, and one worm gear bearing. Abu has stopped including the anti-reverse bearing in the count for the 2014 line up. So, the new C4 is technically a C5. It has one anti-reverse bearing, two spool bearings, and two worm gear bearings (one bearing is fixed on the worm gear itself). Hope this helps!

Al, you can keep the BCX running for a longer while if you keep a couple of spare pawls around. If the reel locks up on you, or you feel it skip (even once), just stop what you are doing and replace the pawl. If you reel down after it's locked up or it skips, you run the risk of chewing up the teeth on the cog wheel and spool pinion gear. Also, seeing as how the BCX line isn't as sturdy as the legacy reels, it should last a little longer if you stay with the recommended line strength or less. While the BCX isn't the greatest reel, may as well try to get as much life out of it as you can.

Someone once said they sell pawls at academy not sure if that's true or not. I'm running 12 lb mono on it right now. I lucked out and just bought a 6600 c4 on a 7ft ugly stick gx2 for 100 bucks never used on craigslist. Just landed my first channel on it last night. That reel is smooth as butter awesome. But i'll keep the bcx around till it dies and when it does i'm covered with the c3 and c4.

Save up your pennies and get a Shimano Tekota 300 or a Diawa Saltist.

Been using round reels for years for salmon fishing in the PNW and have learned a lot of lessons.

I've still got a bunch of round reels, many more than I have newer low profile casting reels.

If you can find any of the Tica round reels give one of those a try. I've got three of them and they are darn good reels.
