My bro-in-law (Tim) and I met OldCoach (Rob) for a day of fishing at Whitney. Our only expectation was that it was going to be a great day on the water. Tim and I had not fished together for many years. I drove down from Garland, Tim from Arlington and Rob from Waco. Amazingly enough we all got to where we were supposed to be at about the same time. Launched out of Loafers Bend and headed North. A little cool but no wind so it was a smooth ride in Robs great boat. Things started a little slow as Rob and Tim caught 3 fish each before I even got a bite. Tim caught a real nice crappie on a slab.. We fished a few humps in 20-25 fow water. Then we noticed several boats out on a large flat. Went over there graphed a little, spot locked and started catching a LOT of sandies and a few stripers over the next four hours. I don't think more than a minute or two passed that one of us didn't have a bite and there were multiple times all three of us were hooked up. Most of the time the graph was blank but if you looked real close they were hugging the bottom and that's how we fished for them, no more than a foot off the bottom. And now the weird part - the birds got up and were working all over this large flat (18-22fow) and it was really on then. I don't ever remember seeing birds work like this, this early in the year. As we were busy catching fish Rob noticed a man and his son really struggling to catch fish. Rob trolled over to them, we offered a couple of lures, advice and invited them to stay with us to find fish. It wasn't long before the young man caught a fish and we all cheered him on. This was the highlight of our day. We ALL had a great day, one to be remembered for a long time. Thanks Rob for the invite! Tim with first fish - big crappie Graph when the birds were working Striper Rob with a decent sandie.

Very nice report, Steve! Sounds like hubbard yesterday, the fish were hugging tight to the bottom and we're HUNGERY! Just slightly lift the slab...bam! But the striped bass look more fun I gotta say this winter I caught the most fish on the little SSS slabs like the one in the pic. It's either a 1oz or a 3/4 oz size. I am running out od the small SSS and don't think Moe sells the SSS anymore, doh!

Todd, Moe still sells them, go get you some. Sometimes they prefer the small profile of the sss. SSS

Cool thanks, Steve. Will stock up some. Besides small, the bullet profile SSS slabs keep the line more verticle for deadstick because they don't catch the water like the "flutter" profile slabs which work better for me in the summer I haven't used my driftsocks this winter but used the trolling motor more for slow drifts, then spotlocked when I have good markings. The SSS worked better with stop and go fishing. Lol
