I bought a Polyester gel gelcoat repair kit. I mixed a small amount with the recommended amount of dye and catalyst. For some reason the mixed resin does not harden completely.
What can I do to get it to harden better? More catalyst?

If your mixing at the correct ratio, then the temp and humidity might be playing a role in it not setting up.

I think less catalyst will make it harden faster IIRC. But that may not be an option if the stuff is already on your boat.

When I get home, I'm reading the instructions once again to make sure i'm not missing something. I read on The Hull Truth that i need to cover the area with plastic or some sort of PVA coating agent to keep air out to cure/harden the gelcoat.

DUH!! I totally skipped the step where it says to cover the repaired area with plastic and make sure no air is trapped under the plastic.

Gelcoat takes forever to cure if exposed to air. You can cover the spot with a piece of plastic wrap and that works as good as PVA.

How did your repair turn out? I have a couple of spots I am going to attempt.
