The run is just around the corner, I actually drove over to the river the other day and people were already starting to catch a few. What are y'all's favorite flies for these guys? I just caught the tail end of the run last year and never really got it figured out. I just couldn't seem to get a hit whiles others would catch them every cast. So show me some of y'all's favorite patterns. I want to start tying a few to fill up my box.

small white, white/chartreuse, or all chartreuse clousers. typically the sparser it is tied the better, but the water clarity is the deciding factor on that.

I agree with 2Flyfish4. Can't beat small, sparsely tied chartreuse Clousers, the shorter the better. If the fish are deep, I sometimes have good luck with a Borski Slider. My buddies in the Alamo Fly Fishers in San Antonio swear by a fly they call the Naked Lady, a Clouser tied with no buck tail, just flash. My personal favorite material is Arctic Fox tail. I'll also wrap the shank of the hook with pearl Diamond Braid (woven Mylar).

Have fun! They are a great fly rod quarry.

I've had a lot of luck with small Clouser-type flies using bead chain eyes and just a small tuft of Krystal Flash; no hair or marabou. I generally use a 2 wt. for whites, so I have to keep them pretty light to be able to cast them. I tie them on a #10 to #14 hook with the smallest brass bead chain I have. I've used a larger, heavier version on the 5 wt. when they get really deep on me.

small, white and chartreuse work well for me as well as a small zonker like the ones I posted a few days ago but tied on long shank size 12

x 1000% on these recommendations- Sinking tip has worked well for me, but have also used small weights to get them down fast if you need to.

Would be interested to hear what other flies people have had good luck with. I bet a spoon fly, mylar minnow and cypret minnow might work. I bet it's tough to beat the clouser though. Those dumbell eyes sink fast and give it a tempting action.

The only two rods I have are 8wts, I know it's overkill but I don't really want to spend the money on a smaller rod when 99% of my fishing is on the coast, I tied up a bunch of cloisters last night in white and chart. in a few different sizes. I'm going to give it a try this afternoon, weather is pretty nice outside.

Cypert's Minnow is a standard in the Colorado system, but they can be hard to find.

Cypert Mylar Minnows are among the easiest flies to tie. I often have beginning tyers tie them as their first fly. I agree they are good white bass flies.

Oh I can't wait for this to really get going. We just slayed them last year!
The wife has been informed that March weekends are off limits so my to do list is as long
as my arm now.

If you are in Fort Worth-these were very productive spots for me last year

Fort Worth Nature Center
Brazos
Palo Pinto Creek

PM me for exact locations, would love to trade spots and learn more about others.

That is a kind offer sir! I surely hope that we have a productive and enjoyable sand bass run this season.

Anyone tie or use a tube fly. Been thinking about trying some for the whites and hybrids
