LOWER UNITS

In part 1 we discussed compression. In part 2 we will discuss lower units. Lower units can become a nightmare real quick. Before you buy that good deal, check the lower unit by removing the lower drain plug for a second to see if water comes out. Water always settles to the bottom and below the gear oil. If any water or milky looking oil comes out, that is bad news. Most lower units can cost around $600 just for a seal kit to be put in and up in the thousands to be rebuilt.

Take a second to spin the prop and watch the prop shaft to make sure it is not bent. Again, rebuilding a lower unit can get expensive quick.

If the seller tells you the water pump has been replaced in the lower unit, be sure to ask for documentation for your records. Most manufactures recommends changing the water pump every three years .
