It's at least a 3-hour drive, so we drove to New Braunfels Friday afternoon to fish Saturday morning on Lake Dunlap. Stayed 5 minutes away in the Ramada.

Got on the water right after sunrise. We had no idea where to go so we just drove a little ways and started fishing. I had conversed with Chad Miller earlier in the week about places to go but couldn't access my TFF account from the hotel.

After about 10 casts, I caught a little 1-pounder and I thought that this was going to be easy. There I go thinking again. We didn't get another bite for 5 hours. We did the usual; deep, shallow, grass, lily pads, lay-downs, etc. NADA.

We went back to the very first stretch of shoreline that we started off at and my Wife caught a 1-pound fish. We came back to this half-mile section two or three times and it produced the few fish we would wind up with. We finished the day with a whopping 8 fish, none over 2 pounds.

As I knew it would be, this is a very scenic lake to be on. Limestone stained clear greenish-blue water, lots of trees, pads, hawks everywhere, steep banks, and HIGH DOLLAR real estate!

The weather was great and to tell you the truth, I didn't really didn't expect to tear them up. I just wanted to go somewhere different.

The only complaint I can muster is the lack of a restroom at the launch. When you have woman in your boat, this is something you have to consider. I would think that people would gladly pay a small fee to use this launch in return for a bathroom. It would be nice if there was a restaurant on the water to grab a cheeseburger, but, oh well.

We had a good time and some day we'll come back! We met several great people while we were on the water and we enjoyed speaking to them.

Get ready, McQueeney, we're coming for you!

Rayzor

Dunlap can be a very tough lake.. It has been tough the past few months although some folks have caught a few whoppers.. It was better this past summer early in the morning.. Once noon hits, fisherman scurry off the lake.. Water Ski boats take over the lake..

I never go there expecting to catch a lot of fish.. A double digit day on Dunlap is a great day..

If you launch at Schuman's Beach there is a restroom there.
I $5 to launch but its worth it to have a restroom and a nice place to launch and tie up.

For the first time you did pretty good! As mentioned Dunlap just like any lake can be difficult at times. The more you fish a lake the better the chances of finding em! fish

you know how much cooler it'd be if Rayzor had said "Talked to Chad Miller earlier in the week...flat tore em up and caught a DD!!"?????

and my wife has always encouraged me to "do what I love" and become a guide.

I'm a straight up donor at the local tourney! Real talk! Bwahahah.

I know where they SHOULD be, but they're never there when I try. Heck, I went to choke today to meet the folks, didnt even SEE anything with fins. Tails with mouths and big teeth....saw one of those, but no fish.

Thank you for the info but I am not 100% sure where you are talking about. I can see Schuman's Beach Road(CR362)on the map but I don't really see a public boat launch. Can yopu help me out?

@ Rayzor.
That lake is a tough nut to crack; and you can't crack the nut once and for all. It's only a one day thing; you can crack the nut for one day. It's nearly impossible to crack it consistently! You can catch em one day, come back to the lake, and end up going home scratching your head. That lake can be very tough. But with all that being said, if everything goes as planned, you can end up having an excellent day, catch some good fish, enjoy nature, and maybe end the day with a DD at the end of your line. It's a fun lake, but it's also very frustrating at times.

Agreed, tough lake at times and on the same day. One time I caught a 4 pounder on the first cast of the day then nothing for hours. But we like the beauty of the lake, especially at the upper end.

This will be my second time on the lake. Is the Schuman's Beach ramp as steep as the I-35 ramp. I usually fish alone so not having to fight a steep ramp is a plus.

Thanks for the scoop, I'll try the ramp out. Good thing is that it's a small lake and it doesn't take any time to run from one end or the other so it's not a disadvantage where you put it.
