I prefer a high gear ratio for applications, that way I can slow it down if necessary on my own. you also need a higher ratio on stuff like worms so you can quickly reel in slack and set the hook, when you feel a bite. deep cranking would be a lower gear ratio. I have a 5.4:1, but alot of guys use the toros with a 4.6:1 ratio ( I believe). I guess something in between like a 6.3:1 would also work for most applications...just my opinion though.

Spinnerbait: I like a slow or medium 5 to 1 or 6-1 Crankbait: Slow!!! I like a 5 to 1 Worm: High 7 to 1 need to pull the slack out of the line quick Buzzer: I like a 7 to 1, just to get the buzzer up quick. If you find yourself bringing it back too quick, get a slower reel Jig: High, just like a worm reel to me

Buzzbaits: 7.1:1 Soft plastics: 7.1:1 Jigs: 6.4:1 or 5.0:1 if I need extra torque Frogs/topwaters: 7.1:1 Spinnerbaits depending on size: 6.4:1 Deep cranks: 5.0:1 Any cranks that dive less than 10 feet: 6.4:1 Squarebills: 7.1:1
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

You are basically talking about line recovery per reel handle turn (when the spool is full). A 3.8:1 will net you 15" per reel handle turn (RHT). A 5.1:1 will be in the 20-22" per RHT. A 6.2 or 6.3:1 will be in the 24-26" per RHT and the 7.0+ will be around 30-32" per RHT. The reason big deep diving CB's are usually used on 4.7-5.1:1 ratios is because you are not wearing your shoulder out as much. On a lipless CB, I like a 7.0:1 to take up slack ripping grass. On most Cb's, I like a 4.6-5.1:1 (keeps the CB in the strike zone longer). A buzzbaits, topwater, spinnerbaits chatterbaits, I normally use a 6.3 or 6.3:1 ratio. On jigs, T-C-rigs, I like the same 7.0:1 ratio as I have for lipless CBs. Hope this helps explain a little bit.
Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.
