1987 starfire+1987 mercury blackmax+ Vance mf jack plate= ? What is height the motor needs to be to start? I have read prop shaft 3 1/2" below pad then work up, then I have heard and read plate above prop needs to be even with the pad then work up? I have everything ready to go but just need solid starting point.

Steve's Custom Props

Here is a link that should make it pretty clear or at least get you started.

3.5 inches is a good starting point.

feel free to email or pm or post with any questions.

remember the 3.5" below pad is a starting point only!!
some guys need to run a bit lower and some higher.
when even with the pad, i'm referring to high performance boats with sportmaster type gear cases.

btw... my buddy Joe Armold has that exact boat!

we have a 6" rapid jack and it's now set at 3" below pad. and runs a consistent 62 with 23p Laser II at 6k (i've put a bit of cup in it).

so, there's your setup.

and remember.... anytime you instal a plate. PROP TUNING is almost a MUST!!!

stock props just usually don't run good up higher.

Yea guys thanks for the help!! I will be looking forward to tuning the skeeter to way it was or better with possible prop change. Only real reason I put a jack plate on was so I could install a Talon(s) didn't want nothing drilled into the transom.. Proformance wise the Skeeter wouldn't fly out of the hole before but turn a 24p quicksilver 5900 at 67mph tournament load and and colder days 69mph GPS I swear up and down!!... First time I saw it in GPS I couldn't believe it and actually took it back to BassPro for exchange because thought it was faulty.. But still was same.. One day when the transom goes bad I'm going to do a complete resto on her I think will be worth it.. I have had it since 17 and I'm 25 now.. And can't complain since I bought her for $800
