Need some advice: I bank fish(mostly ponds)and have for 28yrs. Hope this does not sound wrong, but I'm not interested in catching anything under 5lbs. Lately I've been using 12" worms but am not satisfied with 6/0 EWG hooks. The main pond I fish is wall to wall coontail moss and about 12 ft. in the middle and 5 acres. Most times I fish without a sinker(depends on the wind). I use a 7ft. Heavy action St. Croix rod, a Abu Garcia STX 7:0.1 reel and 65lb. Power Pro Braid(use frogs sometimes and have been broke off with mono and flouro more than a couple of times). Any ideas? Thanks

Usually when a bass hits a big worm like that they will attack it and try to kill it and take the whole thing into their mouth, so a 6/0 hook should be sufficient...Maybe move up to an offset straight shank in a size or two bigger if you are more comfortable with a bigger hook..

I mean to say I use the Power Pro because I've broken off both mono and flourocarbon.

Doesnt sound like a hook problem sounds more like line or knot problem

Been using Palomar knot for worms for 28 yrs. Most break-offs are 12+ft. from bank. Mainly when they bury in heavy cootail moss. Am going to try Owner 7/0versize worm hook. Have already switched to 65lb. Power Pro, cover is so thick fish seeing line is no concern.

Tokar 5/0 is all BPS has got. Got some Owner 7/0 oversize hooks this AM (5/20/2010)gonna give them a shot. They are offset not EWG. Which is what I want.

Ot sure why you are saying you have a hook problem but I fish hundreds of 10-12" worms a year and there is no reason you would need bigger than a 5/0 hook. Gama or VMC 5/0 is all you need.

the only issue I can see with a worm hook is it being dull. Other than that, when the fish inhales the bait, you set the hook, its a done deal...unless the hook is dull, or you have super stretchy line (mono) with a lot of line out.

I've had 5/0 and 6/0 EWG hooks ball the worm up even on fish I've landed. Also on hook sharpness: I pay more attention to my hooks, line and equiptment than I do my wife. smile 3 things that concern me:The balling up, the short strikes, and EWG's hanging up on the coontail moss. I'm trying the 7/0 Owner Oversize hooks today. I do thank everyone for the feedback.
