A couple of friends and I will be floating down the Brazos River on Thursday (weather allowing) from the Whitney dam to Dicks Outpost. We have made this float three times before and it is always enjoyable. It's a very good easy 8 mile fishing float trip when the river is running full. The water is clear and the fish are plentiful. Almost everyone who floats this section of the brazos are fishermen and weekdays are never very busy. We will coordinate the trip through Dick's canoes @ http://www.dickscanoe.com/ and hope to launch by 7-8 am and should be pulling out around 6-7 pm.

The only real challenges are a strong south wind and low water. If there is little wind and good flow the trip is a breeze. We often beach the yaks and wade fish long stretches of the river. You can expect to catch all types of bass, bream and catfish. The river has everything a fisherman could want.. so if you are free on Thursday you should join us on the river!

You might want to check the river gauges. Lots of water being released.

Its a nice stretch of river. I did it barefoot once because I forgot my shoes. The leaches loved my feet!

I checked with Richard and even though the river is running full it's still pretty safe to float but it will be a shorter trip time-wise. Only takes about 3 to 4 hours to float from the dam to Dicks but he also said when the river is running like this it will spoil you compared to when it's low and slow...

I saw richard down there this morning, had 2 customer's launching in a canoe. i never had any luck fishing with so much current. maybe yall know something i don't? I actually prefer the water when its normal/low. but thats just a personal preference. But i usually paddle down a little ways and fish & then come back to the launch i dont go all the way to dicks place. i want to some day tho

Last time we did this we did it in about 10 hours but that included A LOT of wade fishing and lots of dragging the kayak due to low water. It's a nice paddle, but still prefer the stretch south of PK better.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

me too. And no leeches up near PK. If you dont believe take a bare foot and just stand in the river. The leeches are small but its still gross.

HLS - I'm a huge fan of Low Brazos*

can you please yap a bit about your fast water tactics, fish, hot spots, etc

* same stretch, looks like every day 4:30 - 7 am this week
actually - looks like a graph of a throttle control linkeage with teenager's foot jig a jagging the pedal

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

I'm no expert on the Brazos and haven't fished it under high water conditions so this trip will be a new adventure. I'm hoping spinnerbaits, cranks and big flies for bass will be productive. Everything depends on water clarity. It might end up being a fast ride down the river with not so many fish but you never really know until you try..

there is a link to the right that shows the flow out of the damn on whitney. Looks like the water level is getting lower but its still going to be a fast ride

Great day! fast float 10am to 5pm fished all the way and had to paddle very little.. 6 fisherman, 8 miles, but NO FISH! I had two on but lost both. no one knows how to fish high fast cold water! I still think this year will be some of the best fishing ever on the Brazos.. we will be going back in a few weeks.. hope to do better...
