I have a 88 mdl force 85hp that has had good maintenance. Took it up river in fortworth nature center. (all the way up to water discharge!!!!!) had to troll back to ramp. Reverse works fine. Wont lock into foreward. It grinds. Did go into gear a couple times. I could tell it was going out by the way it was acting (naturally it was when i was all the way up there.LOL) Any ideas

Check the shift cable and its adjustment. If nothing their pull drain plug of lower checking for metal.
