Paddlers, We ( Nails Creek Park Partners ) will be coordinating & leading kayak and canoe trips at Lake Somerville State Park and Trailway's Nails Creek Unit. This is a very good opportunity for anyone looking to learn about kayaking/canoeing and creek fishing from experienced outdoorsmen. Nails Creek rents kayaks and canoes for about $5 an hour so if you have been thinking about trying it now is the time.. On Thursdays we will try to be on the water by 10AM in most cases but the weather will dictate what really happens. The 2nd Saturday trips will be a weekend affair where all are welcome and encouraged to camp out Friday and have pancakes with us before departing to the creeks to float or fish early Saturday morning.

Sure would like to take advantage of your experience. I am in the middle of a kitchen remodel and am tied up for a couple of weeks. Are the Thursday sessions expected to be on a continuing basis, depending on weather? Is the 2nd Saturday session going to be held every month? When you say, "early Saturday morning", what time is that?
I want to join you when my honey-do work is done.
I guess I can just get in touch with you when I am freed up to go.

We are planning to do the next four Thursdays to start and the 2nd Saturday of the month until April. Depending on how much interest is generated from these trips we may continue throughout the year...
I suspect we will try to be on the water by 10 am Thursdays and 9am Saturdays.

Saturday the 13th of February we are having a little get together pancake breakfast and outing at Nails Creek State Park. Wet conditions have raised the lake and the fishing isnt optimal under high muddy water but Im going anyway to kayak around the area with some folks from the Houston Canoe Club. We are trying to get the lake and creeks added to the Texas paddle trails and with the help of TPWD , HCC, The Park Partners and BVFF we should have a good shot at getting that done. Saturday we plan doing one of two trips (or both) depending on the wind that day. Either an open water paddle to Deer and/or Snake island or if the wind is an issue we will go up Nails creek to Flag pond. Either way we plan to depart from Nails Creek around 9AM Saturday after our pancake breakfast and have lunch at the midway point of either route.. If we take the open water trip trolling the main lake with a crankbait or spinner is always a good option and makes good use of all the paddling This event has not been publicized like the one in January so I am expecting 20 people at the very most and likely only 10 or so will make it for the day depending on the weather prediction of sunny but cool. If the weather turns cold and wet we will postpone but so far it looks good for Friday and Saturday..

So is there any place to buy minnows between Austin and Nails Creek park? I am planning an overnight trip for Feb the 20th. I normally only use artificials but my gf prefers minnows. If I don't go to Nails I will probably go to CBSP. I am working this weekend so I can't make it out then.

I'm sure there is someplace along the way from Austin but I don't know that area as well.

I hope the weather brightens up before Saturday.. it's snowing now and it has rained most of the day. Gloomy gray skies get to me bad.. I need some sunshine!
