I have seen the same thing on every lake I have been on in the last 2 weeks. it was first carp, now its catfish. Maybe the lake thermocline set in so fast it deprived them of oxygen???? or else the surface temp heated up so fast it cooked them??? those are my 2 wild guesses for the day smile

Don't catfish spawn this time of year? Perhaps rigors of the spawn coupled with high temps/low dissolved oxygen?

I saw them on Fork myself. I just figure it has something to do with the oxygen. While I was driving home I wondered why i was out there myself. I remarked to my brother that the 2 vehicles on the Rainswood ramp were the fewest I had ever seen.

Catfish are always the last to die in the live well. They can survive low oxygen better than most fish. Plus the spawn should have wrapped up a few weeks ago. I think that low oxygen and heat would have something to do with it, but not the only problem.

Saw the same thing on Conroe too. Almost all catfish. Not anywhere near numbers to worry about, but odd nonetheless.

I saw the same thing on Pat Mayse Lake. Talked with the GW and she thinks they could have been hooked on a trot line and wore down due to lake of oxygen. Sounds logical to me becuase in this hot weather the fish play out pretty quick when hooked on lines.

Yeah, I spotted at least 2 dozen floating cats this weekend on Fork, mostly small ones but a couple of good ones too. I thought about scooping up a couple of the better ones and taking them to the weight-in for the catfish tournament grin

j/k - but considering how little action I was getting from the bass I was chasing it was an entertaining thought...

LAst week, on a Tues, on Ivie; I counted 7 Blues floating dead
up around the Pumpstation. Gills white, and pink, I have
no clue other than the above ideas.
Thanks Bittercreek
