I have been fishing stripers for some time now. My wife and I love it!
However, I have not been able to master the throw net and catch my own live shad. Could someone give me some information on this? I really need to get this going. I have a boat, live well, 4 & 6 foot nets.

Thank you!

Google cast nets, there are plenty of online tutorials you can watch....either that, or get with a buddy and learn....practice in your front yard

Danial--First thing I would do is go to Walmart and get the new cheaters net--they have a ring at the top to hold on to when you throw--works great--I became a expert over night when I got one of those woot

Daniel;

It's all in how you pick up the net in the first place. Get that right and the rest is easy....

If you are anywhere near Allen or Lake Lewisville, I can help you sometime at the lake. If this latest round of rain stops I will be at the lake in the afternoons/evenings most of the rest of this week

Someone posted this link earlier and it helped me a lot. While step by step pics are good, nothing like a video to show the whole process. He does make it look to easy though.

Proline200(aka Greg) is a castnet throwing machine! He gave me some pointers that helped me quite a bit-- now I only throw a taco 50% of the time.

Practice is the key. Find a way to throw the net that works for you. I have to use my teeth because I am a tall midget and can't make it work any other way.Get out in the yard and practice.

Next step is go to the lake and put fishing second. Go to the lake and teach your self to catch shad.Don't get discourged and pick up the slab and go fishing.Try water thats shallower than ten feet. Most of the shad you can catch with a net will be close to the bank or in the back of a creek. Just like fishing they move. You may have to switch creeks or marinas.

Throw a 7 foot cast net. No one throws a cast net pefect every time. A bad throw with a 7 foot cast net is still better than a perfect throw with a 4 foot.Use a good net and soak it in water before you throw it. It makes the net soft and opens better.

Skip the tools that help you throw the net. There to slow. The more you can throw the better the odds of catching enough bait for a trip.

Ask others were there catching bait. Lots of folks won't tell you were the big fish are but will tell on the shad.

Were are you trying to catch shad?

If you're close to McKinney, etc., I'd be happy to show you. A guy on another forum showed me and it's very easy once you know what to do.

You can go to http://www.catchnbait.com/betts-cast-nets.htm. Betts has a video that you can buy for 15.00 that is the best instructional video I have seen.

If anyone wants a good comedy show---come watch me try to toss a net----I'm so bad--I'll make you all feel better about yourselves.

You should bag the cast net and get one of those chinese cormorants with the ring around its neck.
