Looking to buy a new TR-176 Triton Bass Boat.
Don't have the option on buying a Yamaha thru Triton.
So, please don't suggest any other manufacture. Just Mercury knowledge is appreciated!
I can't really decide between the Mercury 115 HP Optimax vs. the Mercury 115 EFI Four stroke.
I am getting pro's & cons on both outboards.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the better motor for this type of boat?
Thanks,
Skoal

Skoal... Optimax.. Pros Fuel efficent,Better hole shot,Lighter weight,...Cons Have to add oil. 4-Stroke Pros.. Quiter,a little better fuel economy than optimax dont have to add oil just change it every 50 hours..Cons..About 100 pounds heavier than optimax not as good of a hole shot as optimax more maintanace than a optimax more moving parts. The best motor for that boat is the Optimax dont get me wrong I not saying the 4 stroke is a bad motor on the contrary just not for a performance bass boat. Works better on a heavier boat or even better a pontoon boat Basically the Optimax is a still your typical 2stroke just cleaner burning engine Beleive me you will be happier with Optimax. And no I'am not partial to the Optimax just because my screen name is OPTI well maybe a little Ha Ha I work on both and never really had any major problems with either Hope this helps in your delima....OPTI

The Opimax will perform so much better than the four stroke in this application.

I totally agree with the guys on this also.
I recently went to the lake with a guy that had a 115 4 stroke merc. That darn thing would take forever to get on plane. Once it did the max rpms were right on. so i could not drop pitch in good conscious because at w.o.t. he would over rev. the engine. i did offer him some choices, but he didn't have that much money to spend on props, and work.
Go with the optimax. you will be very pleased with that motor. And get a laserII with it.

I really appreciate all the input all! After spending the last month on debating this topic with many. I have decided on the Optimax! I have talked with many different marines, boat sales people, and a few friends. Most people speak highly about the Optimax and the performance vs. four stroke outboards. Based on my study I am starting to believe the money invested and the value of the product you can't buy a better outboard than the Mercury Optimax. I believe this will be a wise decision.
Thanks all!
