You can find really good deals on used units from Russell Marine, you could easily snag an HDS Gen3 9 for that budget.

Here are 3 different options. All are on sale as of today. I picked up the Lowrance Ti12 for 999.99 from Cabelas. It actuslly arived by FED EX today. I have a friend who got it a little over a year ago for 1800 bucks. He has the 12 and 9 inch Lowrance Ti and loves them. The one from Academy is the cheapest @ 549, but they all do the same thing. Great value at a great price. Hope this helps.
