CC, I left cut hooks in bass for years because that is what the experts said to do. But TPWD research has shown a high mortality rate for bass with hook material left in their mouth/throat/gullet. The following video shows how to remove a hook from a deep hooked bass without injuring it. I've done it for years, and it is very easy and effective. And most of my hooks are kinda pricey, so getting to keep them is a bonus. Check it out:

Thanks for the link and teaching me something new today. I will use this in the future.

http://www.houseofscuba.com/knives/knife15.html. this might be a lifesaver if it were able to be grabbed with either hand during an emergency. i am unaware of any pocket knife or multi-tool that fills that niche.

That cutting tool looks like it has the advantage of offering protection against accidentally cutting the user.

Ambidextrous knives and multitools are quite common.

parachutists use them for extremis situations, and i'd say being dragged out/under would qualify as such. anything that doesn't come readily to hand is basically a personal anchor.

Thinking about ordering one of these to attach to my PFD. Like the idea of blunt tip and sheath clips.

serrated blades barf
dive knives r too expensive IMO. have owned 2 now. 1st one was around $60 second was around $50.
didnt feel good when i lost the 1st in the surf and the other fell off my jacket somehow and is
still at my good friends house smirk

rapala makes a nice one for under $7 that works fine. so you could
probably afford more than 1 or 2 laugh

i usually have another knife loose or tethered to the yak in the cockpit area.
I rarely spend over $8 on a yak knife because it sees water each outing & i loose them
from time to time. so what ever fillet knife is on door buster deal the month i get there is
the one youll see me with. also try to keep a backup in the crate at all times.
my favorite one is this one because it floats & holds an nice edge smile

when an aviator ejects from a bad jet, he knows before he hits where his line cutter is. it can be what saves his life. whatever you need to cut yourself free better be handy to either hand and better be usable with only one hand.

Sometimes I get crazy ideas and share them with people.

There are razor sharp straight razors available online for cheap. They are one hand open and have square tips. Either take the scales off or order just a blade. Pin the blade into a foam fishing bobber large enough to float it. A lanyard could be rigged up as well. Just be sure the blade is snug enough to not flip open accidentally. Razors are razor sharp.

My son and I have the NRS pilot knives on our pfd.
Got them from Mountain Sports in Arlington. Great knife!

I have attached these River Shorties only all my PFDs left side front of the shoulder strap. They easily snap in or out but I've never had one come loose in 8 years. Sharp as a razor, holds the edge and rarely rusts even in salt.
However, I also carry a pocket knife, keep a knife in the tackle box and often wear a dive knife strapped to my calf.
