I was born and raised in New Braunfels, and once when I was grown and visiting my parents, one evening after dinner the lady across the street screamed, "Snake," and I went over to see what the commotion was. It was a huge coral snake slowly crawling in her St Augustine grass. I ran back to my parents' garage, got a hoe, ran back, and killed the sucker. It measured 39" nose to tail - still the biggest coral snake I've ever heard of...and yes, red touched yellow. I felt no guilt then, and I still don't.

It's far easier to kill them all than to try to memorize the different species and only kill the venomous ones. I'd be willing to bet that most people that think they know the difference end up guessing wrong a lot more than they think. And it only costs about $1 to kill one with a .410 shell. My 4yr old daughter knows more about being an outdoorsman than you.

Nobody should've known more than Steve Irwin, and look at what happened to him. Just think of it as a cost/benefit analysis: you're right and you get to hold a snake; you're wrong and you die. Even if you're confident, it's not worth it. On the other hand, cute little girl. Mine just turned 4 last week:

As a biology and ecology teacher, I'm aware of natural selection reaching and grabbing idiots. Thankfully, unlike Irwin, I don't qualify. I can ID every species of snake in our hemisphere and never free handle venomous species. I appreciate your mild response to my abrasive comment. I get tired of supposed outdoorsman who know only fishing and hunting while remaining oblivious to the systems they enjoy. It's not an excuse for my hostility.

I fished a few hours today at a pond. Saw three snakes but only one of them got close to me. I smashed it with a rock. It looked like the one pictured.regardless I was in thick reeds so I'd rather get him before I step on and piss it off.

Yep, the venomous ones, they got to go ! I can't tell the difference, so I kill them all. The snakes can't remember if it's the short fat rednecks that are dangerous or the tall thin ones... So they bite them all

I only kill animals (mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians) if I either plan on eating them or they are attacking me or someone else. I have seen several moccasins this year on the lake, none are bothering me, so i just leave them alone, if there is one in an my yard or an area that could endanger children, I would just relocate it.
