Need to settle on 2-cycle oil for my 2007 Yamaha 200 HPDI engine. The motor is no longer under warranty.

Previous owner said he bought it at BPS. I went there and they do not carry Yamalube. So he was using some alternative to Yamalube. Guessing he does not even know what he used other than oil from BPS.

Thought this would be simple but found there is synthetic 2-cycle oil, synthetic blend 2-cycle oil, and a crazy swing of price from about $20 per gallon to over $40 per gallon. Cabella's even carries their own brand that is around $18 per gallon.

Any suggestions here? I want the least expensive thing that will not do damage to the motor...

I have been using Quicksilver premium plus in my HPDI for the last 6 years problem free.

The Mystic oil is $14.99 per gallon versus Quicksilver premium plus at over $40.00 per gallon.

I realize that engine repair would make this difference seem insignificant. Just don't want to spend the extra if they are all the same with a different label stuck on.

This is my first large 2-cycle engine. Not even sure how long a gallon lasts if the boat is used once a week with about 2 hours per trip.

Quicksilver premium plus runs about $20 at walmart, academy, bass pro and most gas stations around the lake.

Oh, and an engine rebuild runs around $8000 in case you haven't had one yet.

Whoops, I was looking at Quicksilver Marine Lubricant Performance DFI Oil at BPS.

Show how much I know about the stuff.

Guess I will go with the Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle Oil. Walmart online shows it at $26.96 per gallon. Cheap insurance I guess.

I am with Chris B. Been using Merc Permium Plus in my 250HPDI since it was new in 2008. 350+ hours and no issues at all. I also use Ring Free and StaBil Marine as well.

Don't skimp on oil.

Good Luck!
Scott

I got some of the blue StaBil Marine Ethanol treatment.

What is Ring Free for?

Ring Free is a Yamaha product. It is a liquid fuel additive that helps to prevent carbon build up in the combustion chamber, pistons and rings.

Mercury offers a similar product "Quick Clean".

Thanks Scott. Will pick up some of that too.

A guy at Cabella's told me that their brand of oil was Mercury, just relabeled. Not worth it for me anyway though since I want to stay with one consistent brand and the Premium Plus is more widely available.

I've used it all and now run Quicksilver also, since its less expensive and can be found at more places.

BTW, on a side not, Yamalube seems to be the dirtiest running oil I have ever burned. Lots of carbon build up in the prop hub

Fish Killer brings up an interesting point.

Using Merc/Quicksilver premium plus, Ring Free and Stabil, my prop hub never shows any soot, etc. Its as clean as a whistle.

Another point is to not use gasoline with a higher octane rating that what is recommended. Doing so will not benefit your motor. The higher the octane rating, the slower the air/fuel charge will burn and this can contribute to carbon build up and reduced performance.
