Braid is great til you get hung up. Better have a stick or glove with you to pull free.

I carry a sawed off piece of broom handle for that purpose. A few wraps of braid around it, and I can bend most any hook. I use braid when I'm fishing timber or an especially tough brush pile. I go with mono the rest of the time, and lately I've been favoring one that is cheap and not generally well thought of, but it seems to work well for me.

I like braid for jigging. I usually use 2 rods, one with braid, one with mono. I have gotten to where I use a floro leader for the braid. Really don't know if it makes a difference in strikes, just do it because it makes changing baits a little easier, and I have more than enough to loose a few.

What Merican Fisherman said +1
Make sure you get the super slick. This line with about 3 feet of 8 lb Smoke Green Suffix for a leader, and you are in business.

I use both ....mostly mono ,but sometimes braid as well I broke off a lot the other night so I used my braid rod to lessen my losses of fish the pinch on floats eat the mono pretty fast on hook sets and fights it don't eat the braid much at all and to be sure careful on hang ups with braid you can break a rod with that stuff pretty easy

Hey Dutch, had a question about your reply. If your using braid what's the point of using a mono leader? Never have used braid but was thinking about it. I just started using some Bonehead mono this season and like it but you loose a lot of jigs in the timber.

I use mono. I like to feel everything. I probably lose and retie a lot, but I just can't feel the taps and the drop offs of the brush or rock piles with the heavy braid. Most of the time if I'm using a split shot with a minnow I can bounce loose. It's a little tougher getting a straight-line jig out. When I do get hung, I real down to it and pull straight out as opposed to try to use the rod.

Bonehead 12# braid, yellow, orange or pink on everything but my dock shooter and slip bobber rods. Here on Cypress Springs, my bite ratio increased dramatically by using a Flour leader. When El rojo was here fishing with me, I was catching fish and he wasn't till he put a leader on and immediately he started catching fish! The water here is not that clear, but even when I used PowerPro green, I had to use a leader, so I use one everywhere.

I use braid, 20lb, 6lb dia powerpro with Vanish 4 to 6 lb leader just because I like it and used to it Hey Dutch, had a question about your reply. Braid is great til you get hung up. Better have a stick or glove with you to pull free. BoneHead braid isn't quite as bad about cutting you as Spiderwire or PowerPro is and it cuts easy with nail clippers. I too have sustained some bad cuts in the bends of my fingers from pulling on braided line and I wasn't pulling hard either. Those cuts in the bends of your fingers take forever to heal as they keep breaking open On crappie jigs, I just reel up tight with the rod and line straight, put my thumb on the spool and pull. 95% of the time the hook bends and comes free. If not, I wrap the line around my pliers handle.

Braid was invented to horse big jigs and other lures thru heavy cover, and lift big fish into the boat.(bass fishing) Also there was a need for a smaller diameter, stronger line so that further casting could be achieved. Its hard to cast a medium sized crankbait 50 yards with 50 lb mono, so thats another reason braid was invented, for the strength to line diameter ratio. In my opinion it has no place in crappie fishing. Some stretch is actually a good thing when it comes to crappie fishing. Many will say, well its more sensitive. Detecting bites is something that comes over time, no matter if your using 6 pound mono, or 12 pound braid. If you cant feel the mono, your not going to feel the braid either. Theres so much sensitivity in the tips of your fingers, you can feel a knat land on them, if your tuned in. All of the best fisherman I know, use mono. WHATEVER YOU USE try to stick with it, so you get consistency.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach
