Back in the day you could get into what they called zone 4. That was the area to the right after you went under the RR bridge. As you passed the bridge and went to the right you would see a narrow opening that wasn't blocked off like it is now and you entered what was known as the "hot pond."
You could go all the way up to the plant where they were pumping the water out and anchor or tie up in the swift water discharge. It was a blast in the winter and the colder the better. The fishing was pretty awesome.
The other method was just use a trolling motor and work the rip rap and cast along with artificial bait like you would use for bass. Rattle traps were a favorite.
When you got a strike it was vicious and once you got the hit, you immediately knew what it was. They would fight all the way to the boat and even after you had them in the boat.
