I'm going to give the catfishing a try this coming Friday and Saturday and plan to use shad for bait (providing I find and catch some in my cast net, lol). Anyway, I'm not looking for trophy blues, just "eaters" if possible. I know, I know, you never really know what size you will catch. But, what is the preferred circle hook size for using 2"-3" shad for bait? If I catch larger shad, I will cut them down to size. Thx.

I guess I'm underestimating my quarry, lol. Ok. Off to the store (BPS) to see what I can find. I'll be on Grapevine Friday giving it a shot on a little scouting trip. Hope to find something biting because my last 2 crappie trips with the kids have been discouraging and they want to catch something for a fish fry. I'm going to target windy points in 3'-10' to start since the limited timber on the northwest end of the lake is probably high and dry. I'll also have a couple of rods rigged up for channel cats with Secret 7 and/or CJ's.

OP scott01 TFF Guru S Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 12,665 Bedford	Well, I made the trip to BPS during lunch. All I can say is WOW! Those 8/0 circle hooks looked really, really big to me, lol. I don't think I've ever even considered using hooks that big in freshwater. It's probably because my days as a kid fishing for catfish consisted of farm ponds and shallow channels at the Brazos river for channel cats. Our normal size hooks would be a 2/0 or 3/0 at most. Only time we went big was on trotlines when using live perch for bait.
